In spite of the presence of Gudmundsson, the NATO
Base team did a little 'spotlighting' of their own and
actually lead the Icelanders throughout most of the
first half. The NATO Base team went into the locker
room with a 10 point lead.
After half-time the two teams took the the court
again and resumed their high-flying, fast-breaking,
basketball stunts. However, it wasn't long until the
Icelander's secret weapon, Gudmundsson, took
control of the game and the Icelandic team moved
ahead.
Exchanging the lead several times during the third
quarter, it appeared that either team could win the
game.
As the fourth and final quarter rolled around, thev

'A triathlon. You've got to be kidding. I could no
more do a triathlon than stop a speeding train." This
seems to be a common misconception. Yet, in only a
few short years the sport has grown from only a few
competitors to several hundred thousand partic-
ipants, while many more thousands possess the basic
capabilities to enter the multi-sport event.
Most people already possess the skills in one
sport; it's just a matter of diversifying. With as
little as seven hours of training per week, you'll be
able to complete your first short distance triathlon
and not feel like you have been run over by a cement
truck. Emphasizing the quality of your workouts as
opposed to logging endless miles is the key to
success.
An important aspect of your training program will
be finding the time to fit the various workouts in to
your lifestyle. Usually it is a matter of disciplining
yourself to make time available to workout. It might
be prior to work, on the lunch hour, or after work.
The seven-hour-per-week triathlon training
schedule is broken down in the following manner:
Two hours of swimming, two hours of biking, and
three hours of running. The important thing is to
build an endurance base without subjecting yourself
to over-training injuries.
The two hours of swimming can comprise of two
Ihour sessions, three 40 minute sessions, or four 30
minute sessions. Many people on the base swim
during lunch hour because of the ease of showers and
locker storage.
A minimum of two hours of biking per week is
necessary to keep yourself in good cycling form and
technique. You need the time in the saddle to get
your own seat used to the idea. Indoor training aids
Icelanders led by the slight margin of four points.
But the base team was not easily disposed of and shot
their way back to within two points as the score clock
ticked down to 1:36.
With 34 seconds left on the clock, the Icelandic
team scored to put the game at 75-73. The base
team got the ball and put it into play but were unable
to score as the clock continued to tick off precious
seconds.
As the crowd sat in silence, the clock ran down to
Just three seconds and the NATO Base team missed a
long jump shot, which ended the game at 75-73 in
favor of the Icelandic team. After the game, both
teams exchanged congratulations and comments, and
they vowed to meet again for another game of
goodwill and friendship.
such as rollers or wind load simulators are very
useful in Iceland.
Running three hours a week is usually the easiest
sport to fit into your schedule. Little equipment is
needed and there is a large gym here for indoor
running.
Remember, the journey towards your goal is just
as important as reaching the goal itself. Finding
enjoyment in the workouts will he'p you relax and
look forward to training. As you have gathered, you
will have several days a week where you must train
in two sports the same day. Intergrating these
workouts into your lifestyle you will become a well
rounded athlete; a TRI—athlete. Good luck and good
training.
