“Women’s History” continued from page 2
Senior Chief Silvia is the Personnel Officer and Command Senior
Chief of the Personnel Support Detachment, Keflavik. She is also the
senior enlisted female on base.
“Women have shown throughout history that they can do the work,”
Silvia said. “ Whether it’s filling the position as a manager or the
member of a tug boat crew, women have proven themselves. It’s
important that women are able to fill positions that they ’re qualified for.
It all boils down to equal opportunity, not just for women but for
everybody.”
A 17-year veteran, Silvia firmly believes that the Navy is ahead of
Ilian businesses in regards to women’s issues.
The Navy is definitely a front runner when it comes to equal
ortunity and women,” Silvia said. “Women are being accepted in
management roles, there are a lot more women who hold non-tradi-
tional jobs and promotion is much better.
“One of the most important things for a woman entering the service
is to get classified properly. I think it’s great that women are filling non-
traditional roles. But, I’ve seen some females put in jobs that aren’t
right for them. It’s the same for men also.
“Women’s attitudes are changing as well. Women are getting
enthusiastic about going to ships. They’re getting excited about going
on deployments and serving at sea.”
Silvia believes that training helps both women and men succeed in
their careers and to understanding each other.
“The N avy has a lot of excellent programs such as sexual harassment,
Navy Rights and Responsibilities and NADSAP to help our people,”
Silvia said. “These programs, along with the programs offered by the
Family Service Center, help people understand and leant about each
other.
“Besides training, off-duty education is extremely important. There
should be more command emphasis on continuing education. In fact,
I would like to see a mandatory associate's degree program, in which
people would be required to get an associate’s within six years.”
All in all, the Navy has strived to make create an equal working
environment for all it’s members. Even with shrinking budgets, the
Navy hopes to expand the roles of women in the years to come.
