National Drunk and Drugged Driving Awareness Week WASHINGTON (NNS) - Drivers or pedestri- ans unpaired by alcohol account for one death every 22 minutes, or about 60 deaths per day on U.S. highways. In fiscal year 1992, 126 people died in motor vehicle related accidents while off-duty, and alcohol was a factor in about half of the accidents. Despite the fact that progress has been made to educate military members on safe drinking practices, alcohol related accidents are still occurring. Alcohol awareness is imperative in the light of the following alarming facts: The rate of very heavy drinking in the mili- tary is nearly twice that of the civilian popula- tion. This is, at best, an understatement of the problem in the military community, since other family member’s drinking habits have never been surveyed. Alcohol is a factor in approximately 50 percent of deaths and serious injuries in motor vehicle mishaps and is also a major factor in recreational accidents. One third of all drivers killed in road accidents have drunk more than the legal limit for driving. Just one drink can affect your driving. The best advice is never to drink and drive. Most people know that too much alcohol is bad for your health. But drinking too much can also lead to crime. Public disorder, abuse and rape are linked to alcohol. When a parent drinks heavily, this can lead to an unhappy family. The children may then turn to crime. Commands are encouraged to conduct community outreach and education in reduc- ing alcohol and eliminating other drug abuse. Everyone should be concerned with the where- abouts and activities of the people working for them, not only during working hours but also after hours. Stop by the clubs in the evening. Ask about family matters. Try to identify problems before the crisis stage. Encourage sports and other activities for young, single people and families. Local awareness Earlier this week, CAPT Charles T. Butler, Commanding Officer, Naval Air Station, Keflavik and Col. Thomas L. Allen, Com- mander, Air Forces Iceland (AFT) signed a proclamation designating National Drunk and Drugged Driving Awareness Week as Dec. 6 to 12. This is held in conjunction with Red Ribbon Week, also called National Drug-Free America Week. Locally in support of this week, the Counceling and Assistance Center (CAAC) Navy Alcohol/ Drag Safety Action Program (NADSAP), and A FI Social Actions have teamed up to sponsor an all day open house Dec. 11 in the CAAC spaces, to provide mation about how alcohol can be a conlri^^^B ing factor in promoting inappropriate ior, and reinforcing the choices of abstention and moderate responsible use of alcohol. The new Personal Improvement Resource Center, a centralized library filled with books, videotapes, pamphlets and films all dedicated to personal improvement, will be made avail- able this day to any member of the NATO Base community. Red ribbons will also be made available to every command. While wearing a red ribbon on a uniform is not authorized, military members can show a unified and visible commitment to mobilizing personnel into action for a drug-free America by displaying the red ribbons on bulletin boards. Show your support during the holidays and all year long. Make an impact ot the commu- nity and save lives. CAAC, NADSAP, and AFI Social Actions are located on the second floor of the Air Terminal building. Call NADSAP at ext. 7688 or Air Force Social Actions at 7908 for more information. cijrMfcmasf sjwpphta hi ateetaif The following is a list of shopping hours for the Kringlan Mall.
