The humming noise of the sewing machine
could be heard as the needle and thread cut
their way through the paper. No, it is not
material, but paper that the children of the A.T.
Mahan Elementary School use to publish their
own hardback books. The final product con-
tains all the details of a ‘real’ book that was
authentically published. The publishing takes
place at the Puffin Publishing Company which
recently opened thanks to Cheryl Oise, a vol-
unteer and founder of the company.
“My child brought home a book from Tanya
Dickey’s class. Shortly after that we discussed
what a great idea it would be to start a publish-
ing company for the children. I have been
running the publishing company ever since,”
Crise said.
Children from kindergarten through sixth
grade can all get involved in book making. It
starts in the classroom where the children
decide what they are going to write about.
Topics of the bodes range from numbers, family
members, a recent experience, purple flying
dragons or anything else their creative minds
can dream up.
Then the fun begins. Each child writes and
illustrates the pages of their book which will be
mounted later inside the sewn bound pages.
work allowing their thoughts to take a tangible
form on paper.
“The whole project is a great big learning
experience. Making a book improves the
children’s writing skills. They also learn
library skills because each book has a Puffin
Publishing insignia on it for the copyright, a
dedication page, the story itself and on the
inside jacket flaps, of course, is the column,
‘about the author’,” said Crise.
The spine of the jacket even shows off the
title and author so when the book is placed on
the shelf, it will easily be identified.
Authenticity is the name of the game and the
children are aware of how professional their
bode will be. Crise explained, “There have
been times when I have questioned the chil-
dren if they have made a book before and one
child remarked, “No, I have just stapled some
pages together, it was nothing like this.”
The children also have the opportunity to
enhance their reading skills when they share
their books with other classes. The children all
want to read their books out loud but there is
only time for just a few.
One of the proud readers approached the
front of the room, waited for complete silence
then began to read. The cover of the book was
proudly displayed for all to see, then the story
begins... “A purple flying dragon decided to
visit Iceland one day when...”
by the community donations. School supplies,
paper, coloring items and other supplies are
always welcomed. Volunteers to help run the
Puffin Publishing Company are also needed.
