Approach 1993 with a positive attitude
By NCI Phil Grierson

With the New Year approaching, new
goals, resolutions and self improvement
changes can be made. One of the important
modifications a person may take upon them-
selves is to have a better attitude.
An attitude is a person’s state of mind and
bow they approach another person or situ-
ation. We have both positive and negative
attitudes, with a wide range in between. A
person’s looks, sounds or behavior can indi-
cate a particular attitude to others.
A positive attitude at work can make all
the difference in achieving a successful and
happy work experience. Research has shown
that a positive attitude increases productiv-
ity, chances for promotion, safety and well-
being, as well as life off the job. How you
feel about your job affects how well you do
and how co-workers feel about working
with you.
People who enjoy their work are generally
enthusiastic, optimistic about the day ahead,
efficient, cm time and are cooperative with
co-workers or clients. On the other hand,
people with negative attitudes tend to be
careless, discouraged, without goals, fre-
quently late or absent, unable to solve prob-
lems and bored by routine. A bad attitude can
hinder a person from receiving promotions
and tends to make life miserable for them-
selves and others.
Here are a few ideas on improving atti-
tudes:
- Understand the demands of your job and
determine the most efficient way to accom-
plish it
- Set goals; decide cm necessary changes
and what is needed to accomplish these goals
and changes.
- Get to know your command, its policies
and services.
- Trust yourself, and have confidence in
your decisions.
- Acknowledge the negatives in any situ-
ation, but don’t dwell on them.
It’s not enough to know the difference
between a good and bad attitude; you’ve got
to put your knowledge to work. A good
attitude is reflecteted by being dependub^^h

honest When you make a mistake, admit it
and try to learn from the experience.
Maintain your positive attitude with hard
wok, optimism, a good self-image and lots
of enthusiasm. You’ll find that a positive at-
titude can make a world of difference.
Cooperate with others. Making an effort to
get along will increase the quality of your
teamwork. Show initiative by suggesting
new ways to do things. Get the tough assign-
ments done early in the day, saving the easier
jobs for later in the day when you tend to feel
tired.
Take a course to improve your skills or
leam new ones. Show that you can be relied
on, that you can work with little or no super-
vision. Accept challenges and take an opti-
mistic approach to all tasks.
