Top sailor advocates attention to detail
Story by J02 Colleen“Ghostwriter”
Casper
AC1 (AW) April T. Crowell was recently
selected as Shore Sailor of the Year for Fleet
Air Keflavik for 1992 and Naval Air Station
(NAS), Keflavfk Sailor of the Year for 1992.
The Chambersberg, Pa., native has defi-
nitely carried on Navy tradition for the An-
Traffic Control division because she is the
fifth consecutive person to be selected for the
Fleet Air, Keflavfk, Sailor of the Year.
Crowell, 26, is assigned to the Air Opera-
tions branch of NAS. Upon arrival in Ice-
land, January 1992, Crowell immediately
devoted herself to her job, earning all her
professional qualifications in half of the time
alloted. At that time, she was responsible for
ground control approaches. Her duties went
beyond the control tower, with responsibility
for assisting pilots when making flight plans.
Currently, Crowell fills an E-7 billet as the
Air Traffic Control Training Chief.
“I have always liked to teach and train.
Training others naturally motivates me and a
great part of our job here is training,” Crowell
said.
Devotion was the word that came to mind
when ACAN Dede Summerville, a co-worker,
spoke of Crowell. “There was a time when
Crowell held two full time positions as train-
ing chief and watch supervisor. Despite this
she always did a thorough job. Petty Officer

Crowell always
accomplishes eve-
rything she set her
mind to. She was
never afraid to put
forth the extra ef-
fort,” Summer-
ville stated.
LTJG Mary
Jane Klug, Air
Traffic Control
Facility Officer,
stated that the job
of the air traffic
controller is chal-
lenging. “I expect
more from my
people because the
nature of their job
deals directly with
human lives and
attention to detail is paramount,” said Klug.
“Petty Officer Crowell is definitely among
the top professional performers I have worked
with in my 13 years in the Navy.”
Klug continued by stating that Crowell is a
very well-rounded person attributing her
success to her initiative and aggression
throughout her career. Crowell’s achieve-
ments included attaining a Bachelors of Sci-
ence in Professional Aeronautics while on
active duty, and furthering her military knowl-
edge by attaining her aviation warfare desig-
nation while stationed here. Crowell is a
CPR instructor and a Red Cross case worker.
One of Crowell’s favorite aspects of being
stationed in Iceland is the interaction and
making friends with Icelanders. “I have the
best of both worlds, I am able to meet and
work with Americans and Icelanders. I can
not imagine being stationed here and nevM<
getting off base with the Icelanders.”
Crowell looks to the future with aspir^
tions of being accepted as a limited duty of-
ficer, completing her master’s degree or
“maybe even being the first female master
chief of the Navy.”
