,yte Bytes: coping with stress
By Chaplain Leslie A. Coiaco
Let me begin by saying not all stress is bad. In fact, a certain amount
of stress is necessary for action - it is that which drives us to produce,
succeed, excel. So, if handled correctly, stress can be used as a posi-
tive force.
What is bad about stress, as with everything else in life, is the
excess. Here are some suggestions on how to cope:
1. Identify the cause. Most people deal with the symptoms of stress
and not the source. Ask yourself why you are having an emotional
reaction. Once the source is identified, you can eliminate, bypass or
alter the stressor.
2. Have a support base. Talk it over with a person whose judge-
ment you trust and whose confidence you treasure. Stress is excess
of energy and emotion “bottled up,” and just talking to another person
provides an outlet, a safety valve.
3. Take good care of yourself. Eat correctly, exercise regularly, get
enough sleep. You cannot cope with personal and organizational
stress if you are in a physically exhausted condition.
4. Practice time management. There are only 24 hours in a day. So
leant to work smarter, not harder and longer:
Take time to WORK — it is the price of success.
Take time to THINK — it is the source of power.
Take time to PLAY — it is the secret of perpetual youth.
Take time to READ — it is the foundation of wisdom.
Take time to LAUGH — it is the music of the soul.
Take time to LOOK AROUND — it is a short-cut to unselfishness.
Take time to PRAY — it is the greatest power on earth.
Take time to LOVE and BE LOVED — it is the gift of God.
