It wasn’t an easy road to travel, but the
NATO men’s basketball team came from be-
hind to take first place in the fifth annual
NATO/Island double-elimination basketball
tournament.
After losing to Hafnarfjordur in their sec-
ond game of the tournament, the NATO
men’s team fought their way to the champi-
onship round by winning three games in the
loser’s bracket. That included a tough
matchup with Grindavfk that took an over-
time period to win.
Down by 16 points at half time in the
championship game against the Hafnarfjordur
“Haukar”, it looked as though the NATO
men’s team had met their match. However,
The NATO women’s
basketball team also had to re-
gain ground to make it to the
championship round.
They lost their first match to
Grindavfk, but, after beating
Reykjavik in their second game,
the NATO women met Grindavfk
again in the Semi-final match and
won convincingly 60-37.
the tide changed, as the NATO team domi-
nated the second half, winning 83-71.
The “Hawks,” frustrated by the “stall”
offense played by the NATO men’s team
during the last four minutes of the game,
opted to forfeit the final and deciding game of
the tournament.
The men’s Most Valuable Player award
went to Jon Amarof the “Hawks”.
During the championship game, however,
the undefeated women from Keflavfk proved
to be too strong, handing the NATO women
their second loss, thereby winning the tour-
nament.
The women’s Most Valuable Player award
went to Freda Johnson of the NATO team.
