Beyond Tailhook; discussions centered on integration

’avy's Standing Committee on Mili-
tary and Civilian Women in the Depart-
ment of the Navy, gave briefings to more
than 1JOO people on Monday entitled
‘Beyond Tailhook'.
Evans' discussed the Navy moving in
the direction to eventually be gender-
less, letting male and female personnel
compete for jobs they qualify for, result-
ing in a fairer system. She also stressed,
every opportunity is being used to inte-
grate men and women.
“Today the Navy is in the forefront,
within the military, and in American society
in its comprehensive program and creative
approach to bringing about real progress for
women," Evans stated.
Other target areas she talked about were
the standing committee's 80 initiatives spe-
cifically aimed at enhancing the status
of women in the Navy which included:
• enhancing professional opportuni-
ties for military and civilian women in
the Department of Defense
• bringing realization to the respect,
rights concerns and contributions of
women and
• ensuring mutual respect for men
and women.

are, and will continue to be the founda-

Midnight renlistment for 2

Two Navy journalists assigned to the Navy Broad-
casting Service (NBS) Detachment, Kefiavik, re-
cently had the chance to reenlist together, on air.
J02 Todd E. Hansen andJ02 Susan K. Smith stood
at adjoining microphones to simultaneously re-
give honorable discharges from CW04 Thomas E.
es, Officer in Charge, NBS, and then raise their
ht hands to reenlist. Hansen committed himself
f or another four years, while Smith signed on for
two more. The midnight ceremony gave the two
petty officers a chance to express their thoughts on
their time spent in Iceland and what they expect to
accomplish in the months ahead. Petty officer
Smith will soon be departing for a tour at the Public
Affairs Office, Lisbon, Portugal. Hansen finishes
