Up two games to nothing in the best of five match, CFK/IDF looked confident coming into the third and final game. On the other hand, the Hospital women, having lost 15-1 and 15-0 in then- first two games, seemed content just to score two points in then- third game. Two points stretched to a 12-3 lead and it looked as though the Hospital women might stage a comeback. However, after a time out and some quick strat- egy, CFK/IDF w as able to squelch the uprising and coast to a 15-12 victory. “They have a very strong team,” said Hospital’s coach, Loretta Castro. “You have to give the credit to all their hitters.” Four teams participated in the four-day, double-elimination tournament held last week. The High School team lost two straight matches and was the first to bow out of the tournament. The NAVFAC women played three matches before getting knocked out. The women’s volleyball league was the first of three volleyball leagues at Naval Air Station, Keflavfk, to wrap up its season. The men’s and co-ed leagues hold their championship tournaments this weekend at the base gym. Get ready...get set... go Navy sports programs How does a sailor get Navy sponsorship for competition in sports on a national and sometimes international level? The Bureau of Personnel (BuPers) Navy Sports and Fit- ness Office (Pers-651E) manages the All- Navy sports program. The All-Navy teams compete against some of the most tal- ented amateurs in the United States. The first requirement for competition at the national level is extraordinary talent and skill in a sport. From thou- sands of applications received by BuPers, only about 600 athletes qualify enough for this level of competition. Of these 600 athletes, only a handful will go on to compete against other world-class athletes in international events. The second and third requirements for an athlete to be on an All-Navy team are con- tinuous active-duty service for at least 90 days prior to application, and a letter of endorse- 7t\ mentfromthesailor’s commanding officer. Applications must be received by Pers-651E no later than 30 calendar days before the start of the training camp of the sport applied for. BuPers publishes the training camp and sports schedule each year; and information about the All-Navy program is available from BuPers.
