New policy on assignment of women
Throughout this century, the roles, respon-
sibilities and opportunities for women in the
Navy have steadily expanded in both number
and scope. The Navy has experienced dra-
matic positive changes over the last two
decades and is still significantly integrating
women in the Navy.
The Chief of Naval Operations has re-
cently made the following steps as directed
by Secretary of Defense Les Aspin for both
active and reserve personnel:
1. Women officer aircrew will now be
assigned to combat squadrons. Women who
are already qualified in fleet aircraft will be
eligible to compete for transition to combat
versions of their aircraft. Women assigned as
aviation officers in ship-based squadrons will
deploy aboard combatant ships, including
aircraft carriers.
2. The selection of aviation officers and
aircraft mission specialties will be gender
neutral.
3. Other non-combatant ships are being
opened to women such as fleet-command
ships (CC and AGF), fast-combat ships
(AOE), and replenishment oilers (AOR).
AORs will be opened for women officers
only, due to decommissioning schedules.
4. SECOND, THIRD and SEVENTH Fleet
staffs are being opened to assignment of
qualified women.
5. The following ratings are also open to
women: aviation anti-submarine warfare
technician (AW), electronic warfare techni-
cian (EW), fire controlman (FC), gas turbine
system technician (GS), gas turbine techni-
cian, electrical (GSE) and gas turbine techni-
cian system technician, mechanical (GSM).
Additionally, women are eligible to com-
pete in the VP community for all officer and
enlisted aircrew positions in the P-3 aircraft.
