From conducting military operations to providing humanitarian assistance to daily training maneuvers, you are a shining model of American values—dedication, responsibility and willingness to sacrifice. Wherever you are stationed, you can be proud that you are a part of the United States Armed Forcest in our military. I know they join me in a joyous and safe Independence Day. On this Independence Day, I urge everyone here in Iceland to commemorate the achievements of our founding fathers, reaffirm their dedication to liberty, and reflect upon the sacrifices that truly make our country the “Land of the Free.” loaded rifles of 1776 to that of sophisticated laser-guided weapons of today, the many personal sacrifices required of those that serve remain essentially the same. Every day I am reminded of the hardships we all endure in Iceland as a result of being stationed so far away from the land and loved ones we hold so dear. As Commander of the Iceland Defense Force, I extend my deepest appreciation to you and your families for the many sacrifices you make here in Iceland. Serving your country in one of the harshest environ- ments in the world is not always easy, I am sure that you realize freedom does not come without cost. So, join with me today in celebrating the freedom we defend and the independence we enjoy. Have a happy and safe 4th of July. RADM Michael D.
