Show you care... share
“It is with great pleasure that I announce
the beginning of the 1993 Combined Federal
Campaign (CFC) for the Iceland Defense
Force. The annual charitable fund-raising
drive has assisted people in need for the last
27 years. The campaign will run from Sept.
27 to Nov. 3 in Iceland.
The theme for this year’s drive is “show
you care... share.” There are more than 780
non-profit charitable organizations partici-
pating in the campaign. These organizations
band together each year to raise money for
people in need, and they depend on us to
make it possible for them to continue the
caring work they do. This is an opportunity
for all of us, military and civilian, to make a
difference at home and worldwide with a
contribution.
Last year military and civilian personnel
stationed in Iceland generously gave o
$111,000. Among those who benefit fr9
CFC are people just like yourselves. ^
Your efforts can make a big difference in
improving the quality of life for people in
your community and for many others around
the world. I urge you to join with me to “show
you care” by sharing with others.
The kick-off meeting will be Sept. 17 at 9
a.m. in the Commander, Iceland Defense
Force conference room. All commands are
required to have a representative at this
meeting. Combined Federal Campaign in-
formation packages will be distributed, re-
porting requirements outlined and overall
strategy discussed.

Dining facilities
go for top award
By 1st. LL George Comitos
Chief, Services Flight
Among 34 Air Force installations and
numerous wings throughout Air Combat
Command (ACC), three wings are selected
annually to compete in the John L. Hen-
nessey Excellence in Food Services Award.
This year, the Stone Eagle Inn and North-
ern Lights facilities of the 35th Wing submit-
ted a nomination package and have been
selected by ACC’s Directorate of Morale,
Welfare, Recreation and Services to compete
for “Best Food Services in the Command”
multiple category.
Criteria used in selecting the 35th Wing
dining facilities to compete in the award in-
cluded a table-top review of nominationpack-
ages at Langley Air Force Base.
The nomination package included a 35th
Wing Commander endorsement letter, biog-
raphies of those involved in the wing’s food
services operations, management effective-
ness information, a slide presentation, self
inspection data, food services financial
management information and overall facil-
ity upgrade plans and customer satisfaction
data.
Selection is also based on the opinions of
Headquarters ACC food service personnel
who evaluate monthly food service operation
reports from the 35th Wing. These reports
serve as indicators of how the 35th Wing
monetarily controls government funds and
subsistence.
The John L. Hennessey Trophy Award is
named in honor of Mr. Hennessey, one of
America’s most capable and respected food
service executives. During and after World
War II, he received presidential appointments
to high-level advisory boards and task groups
established to improve military food service.
At the time of his death in 1955, he was
helping to plan the cadet dining facility at the
U.S. Air Force Academy.
In honor of Mr. Hennessey, the Air Force
established the John L. Hennessey Excel-
lence in Food Services program in 1957. Its
primary goals are to improve Air Force food
services competition and to raise morale

Air Force Birthday
“On this, the 46th Anniversary of
the U.S. Air Force, I would like to per-
sonnaly congratulate each and every
member of the Air Force team serving
here in Iceland. It is a special privilege
to work with the men and women who
wear the Air Force blue and support I
the vital Air Force mission.
I want to pass along to each member
of the Air Force team how proud I am
of your accomplishments in Iceland as
you stand ever ready to support the
NATO alliance and the cause of peace
in this vital area of the world. Through
your daily efforts, you provide superb
support to our international agreements
with the Government of Iceland as
well as NATO. And you have my
personal gratitude and thanks for the
many contributions you’re making to
our joint mission here in Iceland.
Fly safe and Happy Birthday, Air
Force!”
