Answers to Feedback questions from November 2
Editor’s note: The following is a list of
answers to questions posed on the Nov. 2
(dition of Feedback.
I mailed a letter on Aug. 23 and it was
received in the states on Sept 22 with a
postmark of Sept 17. I called the Post Office
and was told to forget it, to put it nicely. What
is the policy?
A: This sort of response should not have
occurred. The mailroom policy is that all
mail is post marked on the date that it is
received. The post office apologizes for any
inconvenience you may have experienced
due to the delay of your letter.
Q: There are a lot of nails remaining on the
ground after the Icelandic contractors deliver
household goods. Can something be done
about this?
A: The Icelandic contractors have been in-
formed that they need to police the areas
where they unload the shipment upon com-
pletion of the packing/unpacking.
Q: Can the bowling alley rotate its Saturday
night tournaments to another night, or have
them every other Saturday, so we can bowl
with our families?
A: The bowling program is under review to
determine whether a Sunday league is a
possibility, however the following is the
current policy: Tournaments are scheduled
from 8 p.m. to approximately midnight; there
are at least four lanes available for use by
walk-in bowlers during tournaments; limited
bowling (i.e. a three game limit imposed on
walk-in bowlers) is in effect when all of the
nontoumament lanes are in use. Walk-in
bowlers should place their names on the sign-
in sheet, available at the counter, to ensure a
fair rotation for the bowling lanes.

In November 1775, the Navy Chaplain
jorps was founded to provide on board
istry to its sailors. The second article of
Vavy Regulations adopted in 1775 stated that
“The commanders of ships of the thirteen
United Colonies to take care that divine serv-
ices be performed. ...” In addition to provid-
ing worship services on the Sabbath, chap-
lains often served as educators by conducting
classes to the troops. Early chaplains also
were instrumental in abolishing unduly harsh
punishments aboard ship, especially the cruel
practice of flogging.
Religious ministry in the Navy has an
inclusive quality to it By nature of our
country's ever-increasing religious diversity,
chaplains are obligated not wily to provide
for spiritual needs of their own faith group,
but to facilitate the spiritual needs of other
faith groups, and to be a chaplain to all Naval
personnel and their families, regardless of
their religious affiliations.
The naval service has always recognized
its obligation to make possible the practice of
religion as guaranteed by the First Amend-
ment to the Constitution and to ensure that
citizens serving in the United States Navy are
not deprived of opportunities for the free
exercise of their religion.
As the United States Naval Chaplain Corps
celebrates its 218th year of ministry, we
chaplains thank both the line and our fellow
staff communities for their continued sup-
port and cooperation. God grant us all many
more fair winds and following seas ahead.

Q: What can be done about ordering service
station supplies, especially warning triangles?
A: Although the Navy Exchange Service
Station was temporarily out of stock on this
item, they are now available.
Q: Is there anything that can be done about
the brown water in Coral Sea Housing and is
it dangerous? Is it possible to announce when
the fire department is going to flush the fire
hydrants so we can expect the brown water?
A: We currently have a team onboard to
research the cause of the water cloudiness.
There could be many contributing factors to
the water discoloration, but right now we just
don’t know. Look for more information on
this in the future. To my knowledge, it is not
dangerous. Regarding the advance warning
for fire hydrant flushing, the fire department
has agreed to run a bulletin on the “roller” to
announce when the fire hydrants are to be
flushed.
Q: Why are policies and letters from the VIS
insurance company written in Icelandic?
Can we get them in English? According to
the company, they won’t. Can you help?
A: VIS has assured me that they do provide
an English translation for the Icelandic poli-
cies. You should have received this the day
you were issued your policy, however, if you
were not, the company is more than happy to
provide you with the English translation.
