Ho! Ho! Ho! Christmas cheer comes with gifts, good food and a special friend Story and photo by J02(AW) Natalie Dias More than 100 children enjoyed a pancake breakfast with Santa last weekend at the USO, the third such event in as many years according to USO director Coleen Ward. While waiting in line to visit Santa and receive a Christmas present, the youngsters were enter- tained by Christmas videos and a raffle, which featured baseball bats and jump ropes. Excitement was the byword of the morning— just ask 4-year old Rebeka Amos (right). “I’m glad to meet Santa,” she said, “I had to tell him what I want.” Wive’s club shows appreciation with big donatio Story and photo by J02 (AW) Natalie Dias Many associations and community services on the base rely on volunteers and contributions. One group, the Officers’ Wives Club (OWC), donates money annually to several other base associations. They presented their donations on Dec. 1 at the at Three Flags Club. “The OWC’s ability to give out money is more of a community effort than just an OWC effort,” explained Dalane Fox, OWC’s second vice presi- dent Donations given to base organizations and to scholarship funds totalled $11,100 . “The funds from the OWC charitable accounts come primarily from proceeds received from the Thrift Shop,” said Fox. The OWC organizes and runs the Thrift Shop, but Fox stressed that without the many volunteers who put in countless hours, the do- nations would not be possible. A few of the organizations that received donations were the base library, Family Service Center, Chapel of Light, Navy Wifeline Association, Linen Closet, elementary and high school yearbook associations, Eugenia Baldwin (right) receives a cash award from OWC President LauraChapman. DARE, Girl Scouts and USO. OWC will award their scholarship funds later this month. High school students will receive $2,500, while another $1,000 will go to military spouses. One donation recipient, USO Director Coleen Ward, said the OWC donation was one way the community always comes through to help the USO survive. OWC makes its donations to the community annually each ber, according to Fox. “It’s kind of fun to give this money Christmastime. We all feel like Santa,” 4 The White Falcon
