Experience the tranquility of our town on Heimaey
with a stroll through its sights. You can also enjoy
“sprang”, a popular and unique activity among the
young people of Vestmannaeyjar, swinging on a rope
from the cliff Sprangan.
You are also welcome to visit our Folk Museum at
Sagnheimar.
The history of Vestmannaeyjar is remarkabie and
is presented in the Folk Museum, Sagnheimar.
The museum features the main chapters of the
islands' history. If you want to know more about
the Pirate Raid of 1627, Þjóðhátíö (the island’s
annual festival), island puffin culture, the local fishing industry, and the islanders themselves, then a visit to this this
museum is essential.
A visit to Sæheimar the Museum of Natural History is an adventure in itself. Here, you can see both living fish as well
as most of the bird species in lceland, and a remarkable rock and mineral collection. Sæheimar, the Vestmannaeyjar
Natural History Museum, has twelve fish tanks featuring common fish species from the seas around lceland, the bird
exhibit in the museum features most of the species on Heimaey, and the mineral exhibit has minerals from all lceland.
One of the museum’s most exciting attractions is alive puffin visitors can see. There is also a small tank where you can
see and handle crabs, starfish, urchins, and small fish.

Close to the center of Town is the old fort Skansinn, Landlyst and the Stave Church. Visit "Skansinn” by the harbour
where the past and present meet. This is where the lava flow stopped in 1973. Here, you will also find a traditional
Norse stave church, the only one of its kind in lceland, a gift from the people of Norway. Landlyst, the second oldest
building in Vestmannaeyjar, now houses a small but interesting medical museum.
