Nám á framhaldsskólastigi er hægt að hefja þegar að loknum grunnskóla en nám á sérskóla- og háskólastigi krefst þess að ákveðnu námi á lægra skólastigi sé lokið. Heildarfjöldi nær til nemenda í dagskóla, kvöldskóla og í fjamámi frá árinu 1997. Iðnnemar á samningi eru taldir með framhaldsskólanemendum. Fyrir þann tíma náðu gögn ekki yfir nemendur í kvöldskólum. Námsmenn erlendis eru taldir samkvæmt gögnum Lánasjóðs íslenskra námsmanna um námsmenn sem leita aðstoðar sjóðsins; um aðra námsmenn erlendis eru ekki upplýsingar. Hver nemandi er talinn aðeins einu sinni, þannig að stundi nemandi nám í tveimur skólum þá telst hann aðeins í öðrum þeirra.
