Landshagir eru hagtöluárbók Hagstofu íslands. Þeir eru
lykilrit fyrir opinbera hagskýrslugerð á Islandi og er ætlað að
gefa yfirlit yfir tölulegar upplýsingar um flestaþætti efnahags-
og félagsmála. Ritið er einnig til leiðbeiningar um innlendar
hagskýrslustofnanir því ávallt er vísað til þeirra sem vinna
talnaefnið. Islensk hagskýrslugerð er eðli málsins samkvæmt
háð takmörkunum vegna smæðar þjóðfélagsins og stofnana
þess. Bókin ber þess merki; efnisflokkar eru misjafnlega
ítarlegir og endurspeglar það aðallega stöðu skýrslugerðar-
innar á hverju sviði.
Landshagir taka jafnan nokkrum breytingum frá ári til árs
eftir því sem efniviðurinn gefur tilefni til. Ritið skiptist nú í
24 kafla og í því eru 297 töflur og 32 myndrit. Aftast er
atriðisorðaskrá í stafrófsröð sem auðveldar notendum leit í
töflusafninu. Bókinni fylgir geisladiskur sem inniheldur allt
efni hennar auk eldra efnis. Efni geisladisksins er einnig birt
á vefsíðum Hagstofunnar www.hagstofa.is.
Við efnisöflun í Landshagi 2002 hefur Hagstofan sem fyrr
notið liðsinnis margra stofnana og starfsmanna þeirra eins og
glöggt kemur fram í heimildatilvísunum. Jafnframt hafa
margir innanbúðarmenn lagt til efni í þeim málaflokkum sem
þeir fara með. Hagstofan kann öllum þessum aðilum bestu
þakkir fyrir aðstoð þeirra og samvinnu.
Á Hagstofunni hafa Björgvin Sigurðsson og Anna Margrét
Björnsdóttir haft umsjón með þessari útgáfu en Sigurborg
Steingrímsdóttir annast umbrot bókarinnar.

Preface
The Statistical Yearbook of Iceland is a key publication of
Icelandic official statistics and is intended to give an over-
view of statistical information of the Icelandic economy and
society. The Yearbook serves as statistical reference work in
a number of economic and social fields. It is also intended as
a guide to statistical sources trough references to the institu-
tions responsible for providing data. The small size of the
Icelandic society and its institutes inevitably limits the scope
of official statistics in the country. The Yearbook reflects
this; the chapters of the book vary in scope and detail which
is mainly the result of the different status of the statistics in
each field.
The Statistical Yearbook 2002 is divided into 24 chapters
and contains 297 tables and 32 charts. The book contains an
alphabetical subject index in English as well as in Icelandic.
The Yearbook 2002 is also published on a CD-ROM, that
contains considerably longer time-series than the book itself.
The CD-ROM is enclosed with the book. Furthermore, the
CD-ROM is accessible on the Statistics Iceland website,
www.statice.is.
In preparing this publication, Statistics Iceland has en-
listed the help of many institutions and individuals as well as
drawing extensively on the resources of its own staff. For all
this assistance and work provided I would like to express my
