Statistics Iceland has collected data on
the supply and use of tourist accommoda
tion since June 1984. The monthly reports
specify the number of visitors, over
night stays and occupied rooms as well
as supplying data on the accommodation
available at each establishment. Statistics
are broken down by region, type of accom
modation and nationality of visitors.
Overnight stays increase by 6.6%
The total number of overnight stays was
2.9 million in the year 2009, which is a
6.6% increase from the year 2008. From
2008 to 2009 the number of overnight
stays increased in all types of accommo
dation establishments except hotels and
guesthouses. The number increased by
28.7% on camping sites, 22.7% in private
home accommodation, 17.8% in youth
hostels and 17.6% in holiday centres. The
number of overnight stays increased also
in lodges in wilderness, 14.9%, and in
sleepingbag facilities, 13.4%.
Fewer passengers through Keflavik Airport
The number of passengers through Kefla
vik Airport decreased from 879,122 in
2008 to 719,073 in 2009. As in previous
years, the largest group of foreign passen
gers in 2009 were British citizens (61,619),
German passengers came second (51,879),
US passengers third (43,909) and Danish
passengers were in fourth place (40,270).
400 thousand trips overseas
From May 2007 to April 2008, the total
number of trips that were taken by resi
dents of Iceland aged 16 to 74 amounted to
1.2 million trips within the country, and
approximately 400 thousand trips over
seas. The average number of nights spent
on trips abroad was 9 nights per trip and 3
nights were spent on average per domestic
trip. The majority of domestic trips were
holiday and recreational, or 86% of the
total. Of outbound trips, roughly 72% were
holiday and recreational trips, while 26%
were business trips.
