Statistics Iceland collects data on external
trade, i.e. Icelandic exports and imports
of goods and services. Data of exports and
imports of goods are derived chiefly from
customs declarations but the source of data
for exports and imports of services are
mainly information from companies and
information of the use of credit cards.
Surplus of trade in goods
In 2010, goods were exported from Iceland
for 561,000 million ISK fob and imported
for 440,800 million ISK fob, 477,200
million ISK cif. Thus there was a trade
surplus for the trade in goods of 120,200
million ISK, calculated on fob value,
compared with 90,300 million ISK surplus
in 2009. Exports of goods increased by
12.0% at current prices while imports of
goods increased by 7.0%.
Manufacturing products were
55.4% of the total exports
Marine products constituted 39.3% of
all exports, the third year in a row with
less share than manufacturing products,
increasing in value by 5.7% from the year
before, at current prices. Manufacturing
products were 55.4% of the total exports,
increasing in value by 27.7% at current
prices. The largest imports of goods catego
ries were industrial supplies accounting
for 33.6% of total imports of goods, capital
goods (except for transport) with 22.3%
of total imports of goods and consumer
goods, other than food and beverages, with
14.7% share. Measured in ISK, the increase
in imports was greatest in industrial
supplies and capital goods.
The share of EEA countries 81.8%
in exports of goods
The share of EEA countries was 81.8% in
exports of goods and 61% in imports of
goods. The share of EU countries was 77.6%
in exports of goods and 52.0% in imports
of goods. The Netherlands was the largest
trading partner for exports of goods in
2010, accounting for 34.0% of total, while
the largest share of imports of goods came
from Norway, 9.1%.
Surplus in services trade
In 2010, export of services was 300,123
million ISK and the import of services
266,061 million ISK. Therefore, the services
trade surplus for the year 2010 was 34,062
million ISK compared with 36,040 million
ISK in 2009 at current exchange rates.
Transportation was the largest category
of exports in 2010 as in the year before,
accounting for 145,190 million ISK or
48.4% of total exports of services. The
largest category within transportation was
air transport, 43.4% of total exports of
services. Socalled other services were the
second largest category of total exports,
29%, including all other services than
transportation and travel. There was a
surplus of 68,228 million ISK in transpor
tation, but 32,659 million ISK deficit in
other services and 1,507 million ISK deficit
in travel services. Sales of travel, contrib
uted 22.7% of total revenues of exports of
services in 2010.
In 2010, the largest category of imports
was other services, 119,607 million ISK
or 45% of total imports of services. The
largest categories were expenses due to
other business services including opera
tional leasing services and miscellaneous
business, professional and technical
services such as legal services, account
ing services, management consulting and
public relations. The import of transporta
tion was 28.9% of total imports of services
and travel expenses were 26.1%.
