Best Adventure Trip
Þórsmörk
South Iceland
There are many wild and beautiful spots in Iceland, but Þórsmörk is one of the most
beloved. Cloistered behind the deep and ever-changing Krossá river, it’s inaccessible
to regular cars, but you can either take a bus there, or, if you’re tight on time, book
a super jeep tour of the area. There’s a camping ground and some huts to stay in,
and many hikes of various lengths and difficulty levels. When you work your way
up to one of the many vantage points, you’ll see the Eyjafjallajökull glacier towering
over the rolling green and purple mountains, and the valley far below, criss-crossed
with shining rivers. Heavenly.
Runners Up
Snowmobiling
Langjökull & Myrdalsjökull
You might think that the arrival of
summer would rule out snowmobiling,
but the glaciers are still cold—for now
at least. Minutes into the tour you’ll lose
sight of everyday life and find yourself
surrounded by unending white as far as
the eye can see, save for the speck of
another snowmobile in the distance.
Kayaking
Various fjords around Iceland
Many people come to Iceland to get
away from the city and into nature,
and a fun way to do so is to get onto
the fjord in a kayak. The paddling is
soothing, and “it’s almost as easy as it
is safe,” said the panel. “Plus, you look
impressively adventurous in the photos
afterward.”
