NEW IN TOWN
Flavour Of The
Month
Our favourite recent arrivals in Reykjavík
Words JOHN ROGERS & PARKER YAMASAKI
Reykjavík is an ever-chang-
ing city, with rapidly evolv-
ing neighbourhoods and new
places popping up all the
time. Whether you’re fresh
off the plane and want to try
the most talked-about new
café, or a local or repeat vis-
itor on the lookout for some-
thing new, here are some ideas.
Shop: Yeoman Boutique
Skolavörðustígur 22b
Celebrated fashion designer
Hildur Yeoman recently opened
the doors of her brand new bou-
tique. As well as selling her own
womenswear—characterised
by flowing shapes made with
colourful, busy prints—the new
store will also feature work by
an assortment of Hildur's fellow
designers and shoes, jewellery,
and other interesting trinkets.
Café: Bismút
Hverfisgata 82
Located on Hverfisgata and run
by three coffee, art and design
enthusiasts, Bismút has been
long in the planning. It shows
in the clean, minimal interior,
the interesting exhibition pro-
gramme, and, of course, the lov-
ingly made coffee, served in dis-
tinctive yellow glasses. There’s
also a huge window onto Hver-
fisgata for people-watching.
Gallery: Port
Laugavegur 23b
The corridor that leads you back
into the Port gallery and arts
space is sandwiched just barely
between the bright blue walls
of Macland and one of Laugave-
gur’s 600 wool clothing shops.
But what Árni Már Erlingsson's
joint lacks in size and promi-
nence, this small, tucked-away
space makes up for in spirit, host-
ing artists of all trades—from
street art to sculpture. And it’s
equally down for throwing them
a raging opening party.
Café: Prepp
Rauðarárstígur 8
It doesn’t matter how many cof-
fee houses Reykjavík has, there’s
always room for one more.
Prepp, next door to Lucky Re-
cords, serves tasty toasted sand-
wiches, strong coffee, cakes and
fresh-tasting smoothies with
muesli. The space has been
renovated into an airy, low-lit,
wooden-floored environment—
the walls are lined with comfy
sofas, and there's a central bar
for working on your laptop.
Museum: Marshall House
Grandagarður 20
The Marshall House is a long-dis-
used fish processing plant that
has recently been renovated into
a shiny new art museum. The
first floor holds the long-lived
NÝLÓ gallery, the second the
sparky and creative Kling &
Bang, and the third a showroom
for works by Ólafur Eliasson,
who also keeps a private studio
there. If you’re lucky, you might
arrive during the bar & restau-
rant’s cocktail happy hour
(16:00-18:00, except Thursdays).
Café: Kumiko
Grandagarður 101
Across the street is Kumiko, a
recently-opened Japanese tea
house run by renowned creative,
entrepreneur, and cake designer
Sara Hochuli. Kumiko, which is
named after a Manga-inspired
character of Sara’s own creation,
is Reykjavík’s first and only prop-
er “tea house,” with an extensive
list of specialty Japanese and Chi-
nese green teas, alongside famil-
iar black and herbal teas. And of
course, there will be cake.
