Two Iceland labels sell their CDs
and LPs at their own downtown
stores. 12 Tónar on Skólavörðus-
tigur releases bands like Samaris,
Ólöf Arnalds, Grísalappalisa and
Apparat Organ Quartet; Smekk-
leysa (“Bad Taste”), on Laugavegur,
has released Sigur rós, The Sugar-
cubes, Ghostigital, and
many others. But it ’s
the new bands and ob-
scure rarities that you
should keep an eye out
for: you won’t find them anywhere
else. Blinding by the choices? We
recommend ‘Snapshots’ by Tonik
Ensemble, and ‘Brazil’ by JFDR.

Kolaportið—a cavernous market
by the old harbour. It used to be
a giant jumble sale, but it’s being
slowly taken over by stalls selling
iPhone accessories and imported
trinkets. One gem that remains
is the table that sells
vintage postcards fea-
t u r i ng la nd scap es,
obscure towns, and
portraits of historical
figures. Whether it’s to put in a
frame or sent back to your friend,
you’ll find something good here.
And there’s not a puffin in sight.
Hildur Yeoman Clothing
Celebrated Icelandic fashion de-
signer Hildur Yeoman recently
opened the doors of a brand new
boutique on Skólavörðustígur. As
well as selling her own designs—
womenswear characterised by
flowing shapes made from fine
fabrics with colourful, distinc-
tive, busy prints—the store also
sells work by an assortment of
Hildur's fellow designers, as well
as shoes, jewellery, French tea
and other interesting trinkets.
