and his furry companion had
come to visit. Svanur and his dog
have been living in a camper at the
campsite for around seven months
now.
“I lost my room in July be-
cause I have a dog,” Svanur says.
“People who were renting the
other room were scared
of the dog, and they
tried everything
t hey c ou ld t o
get me and the
dog out.” De-
spite receiv-
ing a pension
of 200,000 ISK
(about €1,591)
p e r m o n t h ,
Svanur gave up
finding housing be-
cause it’s very difficult
to find a place that accepts
pets.
The only solution was to buy a
camper, which cost 350,000 ISK
(around €2,785). Svanur had to
complete the purchase in two sep-
arate payments, which only gave
him 25,000 ISK (about €198) to live
on in those two months. “It was
the only way to have a roof over my
head,” he says.
Before Svanur retired, he spent
his time building fibre-
glass. “It ruined my
b a c k ,” he c om-
ments. He has
fam i ly in the

d o e s n ’ t s e e
them regular-
ly. “I have a son,
one sister and
three brothers,”
he says. “I don’t
care if I have to live
in my car for Christ-
mas, because I have my dog.
I know she loves me.” His dog for
sure keeps him good company in
the cold, dark winter.
