Hot news from the cold Icelandic countryside
Words: Andie Fontaine
A man in northeast Iceland received 45 days probation for threat-
ening to kill a cop in a restaurant, while armed with a small pocket
knife. The defendant readily admitted to his crime, expressing
regret and saying that
being drunk was no
excuse for his be-
haviour. In addition
to his sentence,
he must also
pay his public
defender
250,000
ISK, and his
pocket knife
was seized.
Road conditions in the
Westfjords continue to be a
problem, although not
for the usual reasons
of potholes or a
lack of pave-
ment. Some
truck drivers
have shown,
with photo
evidence, that
many of these roads
are so narrow,
that trucks
driving on
them are peril-
ously close to tipping over
into the sea. The solution:
smaller trucks or wider
roads.
Police in south Iceland report that there are travelling thieves in the area. These men drive from farm to farm,
knocking on doors. If someone answers, they say they’re looking for a place to stay. If no one answers, then they
enter the house and steal valuables. Clearly not criminal masterminds at work.

East: Best Café
Salt
Out in the east, seasonal opening
times can be patchy and inconve-
nient, but Egillstaðir’s café-bar
Salt has you covered. Whatever
the time of year, you can hole up
in this spacious and comfortable
dining room and tuck into some-
thing from the surprisingly mas-
sive and diverse menu, which has
everything from curries to pizzas
to local meat and fish dishes, and
more besides.
West: Best Tour
Vatnshellir Cave
It only takes an hour to experience
the Vatnshellir cave, but it was the
unanimous choice of the panel. Put
on a helmet and marvel at stalag-
mite-like formations which were
formed by dripping lava and bacte-
ria that sparkles in your flashlight
beams. After the final descent—35
metres below the surface—shut off
your flashlights and stand in dark-
ness. Due to the composition of the
cave walls, Vatnshellir has no echo,
so no one will hear you scream.
South: Best Café
Kaffi Krús
A staple for the past 25 years, this is
a super cosy place that's a great stop
for a nice meal after a long day on
the road. Located in a beautifully
maintained historic house, the décor
mixes antique and modern elements
seamlessly and with clean design.
The nice little menu has a great se-
lection of meals, while the in-house
bakers make sure to have 16 incred-
ible varieties of cake every day. They
look as good as they taste and the
service is absolutely lovely, too.
