HAPPY HOURS
Get Trashed
And Save Cash
Reykjavík’s happiest hours
Words: Hannah Jane Cohen Photo: Art Bicnick
Drinking is fun. It loosens our
inhibitions and makes things
like confessing your life story
to some rando in the bathroom
possible. We also all like a deal.
So combine alcohol and respon-
sible budgeting with the best
happy hours in time. Don’t you
feel like an adult now?
For the real Reykjavík
experience: Kaffibarinn
You genuinely can’t get a purer
shot of downtown Reykjavík than
inside the deep red walls of Kaf-
fibarinn. At any time of the day
(after they open at 15:00) you’ll
find barflies, hipsters, tourists,
a rolling cast of colourful regu-
lars, and an occasional member
of Sigur Rós having a smoke out-
side. It’s probably the best place
to meet locals—or at least, be ig-
nored by them—which is an au-
thentically Icelandic experience.
Happy Hour is every day from
15:00 to 20:00; there’s a selection
of tap beers priced between 700
and 950 ISK. On Wednesdays,
they add to this spectacular with
“Wine Wednesday”, where wine
is 700 ISK all day, and there’s a
free communal cheese plate.
Now that’s a happy hump-day.
For that “look at me,
I’m fancy” cocktail
hour: Veður
Veður burst onto the bar scene
last year, bringing a sophisti-
cated touch to the downtown
scene. Think Death & Co. meets
Scandinavian cool. While their
drinks normally ring up at those
typical jaw-dropping Reykjavík
prices, there’s a cocktail happy
hour from 19:00 to 21:00, when
a selection of their meticulously
crafted cocktails cost 1,500 ISK.
Pick up a Brennivín Mule, or one
of the town’s best espresso mar-
tinis. If you’re a pleb who doesn’t
like mixed drinks, there’s also a
regular happy hour from 12:00
to 19:15 with all beer and wine
priced at 800 ISK.
For that day-off-
work marathon
session: Bravó
On the first day, God created the
Heavens and the Earth. On the
second, the Pint Glass and the
Breakfast Beer. Yes, there’s no
better way to start your day off
than with a pint of Einstök, and
no better place to sit and sip it
than in Bravó. The happy hour
runs from 11:00 to 20:00 every
day, so it’s basically a whole hap-
py afternoon. The dim bar is
filled with amber-toned light,
and bohemian pillows tossed
along the window seating. You
can pick up beers from 700 to 900
ISK, cider for 1,000 ISK, Bren-
nivín shots for 800 ISK, and red
and white wine for 900 ISK. Hap-
py Days are here to stay!
For a quiet beer with
that unread copy of
‘Ulysses’: KEX Hostel
If you’re one of those losers who’s
almost 40 and still hasn’t fin-
ished ‘Ulysses,’ come get faux-in-
tellectual in the cosy see-and-be-
seen environment of KEX Hostel.
From 15:00 to 19:00 every day
you can pick up Bríó, Classic,
and Boli for 650 ISK, some Kex
Brewery craft beers at a discount,
and house red and wine for 650
ISK. That’s a really good price
whether you’re a tourist or a lo-
cal. So flip to a random page and
pretend you know what the hell
Joyce is saying soundtracked by
jazz bands or lo-fi music. Try not
to get the pages greasy: chicken
wings are 650 ISK, and baked al-
monds are 500 ISK.
