SUNDAY POST
EXHIBITION
Paintings by Asgeir Bjarnporsson.
There is a vivid glimpse of modern
Icelandic painting in the work of Asgeir
Bjarnjporsson exhibitid this week at the
Utvegsbanki, Reykjavik.
The artist shows intense feeling for his
native countryside in the landscapes,
which vary from summer scenes in the
mountains to a winter snow scene at
Hveradolum. One of the most difficult
features of the Icelandic country-side from
the painters point of view is the rapidity
with which the pastel colours of the hills
transform themselves through every shade
of blue and purple. Asgeir BjarnjDorsson
has succeeded in capturing these ephe-
meral shades in almost all his landscapes.
Among these Grabrokarhraun is an out-
standingly beautiful study, full of intri-
guing shadows.
The three small water colours of abroad
are not so successful and they are all too
reminscent of Iceland.
The main portraits form a charming
group of four studies including one of Dr.
Olafur Danielsson and one of Fru Brekkan
and her son. The three small portraits
crowded on to the same wall rather de-
tract from the ensemble but each of the
four big portraits show characterful paint-
ing and reveal the artist powers.
This exhibition is well worth a visit for
the spirited Icelandic landscapes and the
convincing portraits. And anyone who has
been frightened of Icelandic art by the
strangeness of Einar Jonsson can breathe
easily here: it is all comprehensible.
