RAID ON LONDON.

single raiders.
High explosive bombs and
hundreds of incendaries rained
over the city. The bombs
wrecked a number of houses
and started several fires which
were, however, quickly dealt
with by the firemen working
under difficult circumstances.
Among the buildings wrecked
were 2 hospitals and three ho-
tels. A big boarding house re-
ceived a direct hit and it is
feared that many people have
been killed. On the outskirts of
London 3 wards of a hospital
were destroyed by fire. Memb-
ers of the hospital staff helped
the firemen to put out the fires
while hundreds of incendiaries
were raining down in the hos-
pital grounds. In one district 30
shops were damaged.
The number of people killed
and injured is not so heavy as
might have been expected con-
sidering the severity of the
raid.
Two of the raiders shot down
last night came down in Essex.
In yesterday’s air battles
over Britain the Germans lost
20 planes.
