Having a baby changes your life. New babies can be demanding, especially for
new parents. That’s why the Healthy Baby community programs were developed.
Healthy Baby community programs are friendly, informal programs that provide
you with support, information and resources before and after you have your baby.

REYKJAVÍK — Gary Doer,
Premier of Manitoba, made an
official visit to Iceland in late
August at the invitation of the
Prime Minister’s Office.
This is Premier Doer’s sec-
ond visit to Iceland; he visitied
the country in 2001 and was
won over then, by his own ac-
count, by the country and its
people.
“I find it striking how much
the economy has grown here in
Iceland since the time I was last
here,” Doer said in an interview
with the Morgunblaðið. He vis-
ited the newspaper’s headquar-
ters on August 25.
Doer is prominent in the
Icelandic community in Mani-
toba and has shown great inter-
est in events held by the Icelan-
dic descendants.
“We share a great history,
and on this trip the intention is
to strengthen those bonds and
lay the foundation for a good
relationship in the future,” he
said.
The trip came to an end on
August 27. Over the course of
his trip, Doer visited Icelandic
companies and met with politi-
cians.

WINNIPEG, MB — Lestrar-
félag, the Icelandic reading club,
embarks on its 11th year this
month with its inaugural meet-
ing for the fall-winter season.
To commemorate 10 years
of getting together and discuss-
ing Icelandic and Icelandic
North American literature, says
organizer Linda Sigurdson Co-
lette, the first meeting will be
a return to the club’s roots, in
a sense, discussing the work of
Bill Holm. “He was the first au-
thor we had at the first Lestrar-
félag in the Common Room at
University College, in Septem-
ber 1996,” she says. At the up-
coming meeting on September
28, she says, “People can come
to that evening with questions to
ask Bill.”

EDMONTON, AB — It’s
official: September 30 is Leif
Eiriksson Day. Thanks to the ef-
forts of the Icelandic Society of
Edmonton, Norðurljós, Mayor
of Edmonton Stephen Mandel
made it an official proclama-
tion.
Apart from that, Norðurljós
has events planned for the final
weekend of September to com-
memorate Leifur Eiríksson’s
voyage to North America. On
Friday 29 September, the Ice-
landic Canaidan Chamber of
Commerce will meet, as was
reported in the last issue of L-
H.
The next high-profile gath-
ering is the Icelandic Society’s
annual fall supper on Saturday,
which has been renamed the
Leifur Eiríksson Supper. The
fundraising supper is a volun-
teer effort by the club.
The idea of comemorat-
ing Leifur Eiríksson has been
on club member Bob Rennie’s
mind for some time.
In 1964 U.S. President
Lyndon B. Johnson, backed by
a unanimous Congress, pro-
claimed October 9 “Leif Eric-
son Day” in commemoration of
the first arrival of a European
on North American soil.
Bob says the local Presi-
dent of the Scandinavian Trade
and Culture Society, Kai Linge,
who is of Danish descent, en-
couraged him.
“He asked me one day at a
meeting, ‘Why don’t you Ice-
landers do something to rec-
ognize Leifur Eiríksson? Be-
cause I hear the Icelanders and
the Norwegian arguing about
who owns him.’” Bob liked the
idea, and so did the Norðurljós
board. He also made inquiries
to other Icelandic organizations
across Canada, some of whom
were interested; but to get the
ball rolling, Edmonton decided
to tie the date in with their fall
supper.
Bob acknowledges that
since the actual date of Leifur’s
landing on the eastern coast of
North America is unknown,
setting a day to commemorate
it is not historically accurate.
But, he notes, that didn’t stop
the U.S., and he feels it’s time
Canada did as well.
“I’m basing it on the theory
that we’re getting all sorts of
people from every continent
in the world coming to Canada
to make this their home, and
they’re bringing with them
their culture and customs, and
why should we forget the way
Canada was discovered by the
outside world? And it was an
Icelander who did it.”
