One hundred years ago
this week, Heimskringla re-
ported that gold had been
found in Vatnsmýrin, around
135 or 150 feet deep. There
was still controversy sur-
rounding a number of Chi-
nese people who had arrived
in Canada but had not paid
the $500 head tax. The French
had recently lost their airship.
King Óskar of Sweden died
and Prince Gustav took the
throne. Þorbergur Fjeldsted,
lighthouse keeper on Hecla
Island (Mikley) reported that
haying this year was average,
and fishing had gone fairly
well.
Lögberg reported that Al-
fred Nobel, troubled by the
use to which the explosives
he had invented were being
used, would use his royalties
to fund an annual peace prize.
“South Africa for Negroes”
was the slogan of a political
movement in Ethiopia. Mem-
bers of the older generation in
Iceland could not remember a
summer that had been as cold
— snow and frost had been
seen in August. Despite this,
haying had not been bad ev-
erywhere.
Fifty years ago this week,
Heimskringla thanked its sub-
scribers for helping make it
the second-oldest newspaper
still publishing in Winnipeg
(the oldest was the Winni-
peg Free Press, formerly the
Manitoba Free Press), adding
an ancient Christmas wish:
God be in your home, and
Good Yule! A meeting in Ice-
land’s Alþingi was cancelled
following the death of Jón
Sigurðsson of Kaldaðarnes.
Ragnar Stafansson’s transla-
tion of “Rebecca” continued.
Lögberg published a 32-
page 70th anniversary issue.
The Prime Minister of Ice-
land, President of Iceland
and Bishop of Iceland were
among many congratulating
the newspaper on its anniver-
sary. Christmas was called a
celebration of love, gather-
ings, remembrance, singing
and hope. An article consid-
ered holy men and the hu-
manities. Professor Richard
Beck wrote on the history of
the Lögberg newspaper, cred-
iting its endurance in part
to the literary tradition Ice-
landers brought with them to
North America.
Twenty-five years ago
this week, Lögberg-Heim-
skringla commented that
“Christmas kindles light
in every corner” and that
seasonal traditions in Ice-
land prior to the adoption
of Christianity recognized
the significance of the dark-
est period of winter ending.
Einar Arnarson recalled In-
gibjörg and Jakob Jónsson’s
kindness to his family when
settling in Markland near
Lundar, MB in “A Pioneer
Woman.” The late Ingibjorg
and Leo Danielson were re-
membered in “Thoughts of
Mom and Dad.” In Iceland,
Gunnar Thoroddsen’s tri-
partite government narrowly
survived a censure motion.
Speculation was fuelled by
possible inclusion, in an ex-
pected election, of an all-fe-
male, non-partisan slate of
candidates. Candidates from
such lists had won in munici-
pal elections in Reykjavík
and Akureyri.
