SELKIRK, MB — A snowy
afternoon didn’t prevent mem-
bers of the Icelandic commu-
nity in Selkirk from attending
a reception at the Evangelical
Lutheran Church Hall for the
Lögberg-Heimskringla Future
Fund Capital Campaign.
Campaign Chair Dr. Ken
Thorlakson was master of cer-
emonies for a brief program.
Among the speakers were L-H
Editor David Jón Fuller, INL
President Garry Oddleifson and
L-H Board Members Bob Baker
and Vi Bjarnason Hilton.
Certifi cates recognizing do-
nors for their contributions to
the Future Fund were presented
to those able to attend. Refresh-
ments, including coffee and vín-
arterta, were served afterwards.
The next reception is planned
for Lundar on March 25.
Jon Sigurdsson Chapter IODE
supports school project

WINNIPEG, MB — Re-
cently the Jon Sigurdsson
Chapter IODE members agreed
to join Her Honour Lenore Ber-
scheid on a project she and her
husband the Honourable John
Harvard, Lieutenant-Governor
of Manitoba, are advocates for
during his term in offi ce.
The project is aimed at chil-
dren who have special needs as
a result of disorders of develop-
ment, such as autism spectrum
and fetal alcohol spectrum.
The intention is to create
special rooms in 15 schools
called “A Place to be Peace-
ful and Happy” where these
children can go when they are
overly stimulated in a regular
classroom setting. These rooms
are specially furnished and
equipped with special lighting
to create a calm and peaceful
environment.
Some of the items needed
for this project are handmade,
and that is where the mem-
bers of Jon Sigurdsson Chapter
IODE come in.
For this purpose several
members gathered recently at
the home of Johanna Wilson,
who provided a delicious lunch
and Icelandic background
music, which quickened the
stitching and made the work
fl ow easily through members’
hands. At the Jon Sigurdsson
IODE Christmas luncheon,
chapter members collected over
$200 for this project and Flor-
ence Holigroski donated sev-
eral metres of fl eece material
for making fi dget bags, among
other things. Florence is also
working on special, weighted
lap blankets, which have calm-
ing effects.

IAU members
honoured
SPANISH FORK, UT —
The Icelandic Association of
Utah (IAU) honoured contribu-
tions by two members of the
Icelandic community at their re-
cent þorrablót on February 24.
Club President Jack Tobiasson
introduced the IAU 2007 hon-
ourees, both contractors who,
in 2005, helped with the resto-
ration of the Icelandic Memorial
in Spanish Fork.
Bruce Hall agreed to lead the
demolition and reconstruction of
the Icelandic Memorial project
in 2005. Bruce is the owner of
Hall Engineering and Construc-
tion and a great-grandson of
Gísli Bjarnason, who immigrat-
ed from Iceland to Spanish Fork
in 1883 at the age of three, with
his mother Jóhanna Árnadóttir.
Bruce is well connected with
the construction business in the
Spanish Fork area. His son Reil-
ly was in need of an Eagle Scout
project. It was agreed for Reilly
to use this as his project. Reilly
and Bruce were able to get do-
nations of material and labour as
well as oversee its construction.
Richard Johnson helped
with the reconstruction of the
Icelandic Memorial in 2005.
Richard owns his own construc-
tion company and he donated
his time and equipment to the
construction of the memorial.
Richard is a past president of
the IAU, 2003 – 2004, and has
served on its Board of Direc-
tors since 1999. Richard is the
grandson of Jón Jónsson and
Vilborg Jónsdóttir who immi-
grated from Iceland to Spanish
Fork, UT in 1887.

Edmonton club energized in 2007
Bob Rennie
The Icelandic Canadian
Club of Edmonton, Norðurljós,
recently held a very successful
þorrablót and looks forward to
many more events this year.
The management of the club
is now in younger hands with
President Don Sigvaldason and
Secretary Tanya Heibert who is
a fi rst year teacher. Katharine
Jonsson, a student, has been
M.C. for two þorrablóts now.
The club’s new vice president is
lawyer Eric Oddleifsson.
There are many of the “old
guard” still active, but it is grati-
fying to see some younger peo-
ple stepping in. It is diffi cult to
fi nd the time to serve on boards,
hold jobs and raise families.
The Saga Singers are broad-
ening their range with the addi-
tion of Daria Parada, who works
as Choir Director and Vocal
Trainer. She has given the group
new life and quality to their per-
formances. Daria comes with
nearly 20 years of experience
with choral groups.
Many more Icelandic events
are planned.
Returning in the fall, on Sep-
tember 29, Norðurljós will hold
the second annual Leif Eiríksson
Day Dinner.
Walter Sopher has been per-
suaded to organize the entertain-
ment and is already recruiting
help. This promises to be a very
interesting event. The theme will
be “Explorers” in honour of Lei-
fur Eiríksson.
This might be a good time to
take that trip to Edmonton.
