To the editor,
I enjoy the recipes as well as
the articles about fishing (espe-
cially people from Gimli).
I pass on my paper to my
grandson, as he is very interest-
ed in his Icelandic heritage.

To the editor,
I just wanted to publicly
thank the Icelandic Frón chapter
of the INL for their generous do-
nation to the Gimli Icelandic Ca-
nadian Society (formerly Gimli
Chapter INL) of $250 to help us
with expenses that we will incur
in hosting the 90th Annual Ice-
landic National League of NA
convention on April 30, May 1,
2 and 3, 2009.
This is a very thoughtful
gesture on their part and we
grateful for their gift. Thank
you, Frón!
Sincerely,
Helga Malis,
President, GICS

To the editor,
I am twelve years old and am
from an Icelandic background. I
have been teaching myself how
to speak Icelandic.
I have found the Icelandic
vocabulary section extremely
helpful, fun and interesting. I
was very saddened when I saw
that it had been removed form
the newspaper as I am sure oth-
ers were as well. I hope to see
it back in again soon for the
enjoyment and its great helpful
qualities for both young and old
subscribers. I hope you consider
my suggestion.

Dear Sigrid,
Thank you for writing. The
Icelandic lessons are valuable
to many of our readers, and I’m
pleased to report that this col-
umn will be back early in the
New Year!

“Working Together to Build
Our Communities”
Christmas is coming, and there’s not much to be done about it. It’s okay
with me in any case: I’m not
one of these Christmas haters
you hear about occasionally.
(The only thing I really object
to is hearing Christmas music
any earlier than December 15.)
I even get a touch sentimental
about this holiday every now
and again, especially on those
evenings with a fire burning
in the hearth, the glow of the
Christmas tree, a dash of nut-
meg atop the eggnog and the
snow falling softly outside the
window.
It’s a different sort of
Christmas this year for many,
of course, especially in Ice-
land. There in particular, but
all around the world as well,
piles of gifts beneath the tree
will probably be a little smaller.
That’s not necessarily a bad
thing in and of itself, or at least
I don’t think it is. A few inex-
pensive but well-chosen gifts
can make for the merriest of
Christmases.
My own feelings on the hol-
iday are perhaps best expressed
by the photograph accompany-
ing this editorial, which is to
say they are complex and vir-
tually indecipherable. I suspect
this is true of most of us – not
many will have an unalloyed
love or hatred for this time of
the year.
My family did not practice
a particularly Icelandic style of
Christmas. We did not dance
around the tree or make laced
bread. My mother, who isn’t
even of Icelandic descent, did
make a very good vínarterta;
although she often complained
of how difficult and time-
consuming it was (for which I
don’t blame her!), and I don’t
think she’s made any for some
years now. But the fact that she
did at all does give an Icelandic
flavour to my childhood Christ-
mas memories.
It’s also the end of another
year, and I think I can say with-
out fear of conradiction that it’s
been a remarkable one. There
are many descriptive words one
could apply, really, and not all
of them are appropriate to a
family newspaper.
I do maintain that the Ice-
landic spirit is tough: they have
the survivor’s instinct, which is
one of the best things to have
when times are rotten. I think
many of them are looking to-
ward 2009 with genuine hope
and an expectation that things
will get better.
And they probably will -
barring a cataclysmic eruption
or tsunamic submersion, things
in Iceland could hardly get
worse. There’s a certain com-
fort in that.
On beginning this editorial,
I told myself I wouldn’t dwell
on the hardships in Iceland for
at least one issue, and now look
what I’ve done. Well, it’s a se-
rious situation, and not some-
thing that can be glossed over
with holiday sentimentality.
Still, it is with great sincerity
and the fondest intentions that
I wish every one of our readers
a very Merry Christmas and
a safe, healthy and prosper-
ous New Year - and that goes
double for our friends and re-
lations in Iceland.
