The long awaited Icelandic Bakery is now open in Gimli and is called Reykjavík Bakery. You will find it in the Light House
Mall, a short walk from Centre Street or by com-
ing in the mall door on Third Avenue.
Birgir Róbertsson came from Iceland about
a year ago and has put much effort into mak-
ing this dream come true. Thankfully, Guðbjörg
Gylfadóttir Blöndal and her husband Steinþór
Jónasson came to settle in Gimli last year and
are co-owners of the bakery with Birgir. At this
time, Birgir is doing all the baking and Guðbjörg
manages the sales; her husband has other work
as a carpenter.
The bakery also accommodates four tables
and chairs for those who wish to stop for cof-
fee and taste some of the fancy baking or have a
quick sub for lunch. It is difficult to choose from
the coconut top kokostoppur, serbaka, kleina,
Danish vínarbrauð, skeljar kransakaka or the
many more goodies on display. I was pleased
to see a vínarterta for sale but forgot to ask how
many layers it was. Another surprise was bags of
tvíbökur and oatmeal cookies which were adver-
tised as delicious with butter and cheese. There
are many types of bread available and these are
receiving many compliments.
The bakery will be open seven days a week
this summer and by all accounts will be very
busy. While you stand in line you can check out
the time in Reykjavík from the two clocks on the
wall, one for here and one for there. We wish
them all the best of luck for this new endeavour.

Browsing the internet turned up a way of trav-elling Iceland that is
more akin to North America.
A company called Snail.is is a
family business that specializes
in motor home rental. They rent
VW Transporter high-roof mo-
tor homes. The motor homes are
registered for two-nine people
with sleeping accommodation
for two adults and two children.
The units include cooking fa-
cilities and kitchenware. Unlike
tent campers, you don’t have to
bring a sleeping bag. Bed linens
or sleeping bags are provided.
The roofs are high enough that
you can stand upright. There’s
a video on their website about
how to drive in Iceland but any-
one who has driven Canadian
country roads shouldn’t have a
problem. The vehicles are front
wheel drive with back wheel
drive that kicks in automatically
making the vehicle four wheel
drive. The prices, depending on
the choice of vehicle are 40,000
or 50,000 Kr. a day.
When we think of touring
Iceland, we mostly think of bus
tours or renting a car or camp-
ing in a tent. Here’s an alterna-
tive of which most people are
not aware.
Árni Hafþór Kristjánsson
and Sigrún Elísabet Unnsteins-
dóttir, who have just begun this
business in response to the eco-
nomic meltdown, will accept
their first customers in June.
It’s a brave venture in the face
of difficult times. In order to at-
tract customers, they are offer-
ing special deals for more than
seven days rental. They offer
free pickup at Keflavík airport
when you arrive, bed and break-
fast in their home in Reykjavík
for the first or/and the last night
with a home cooked dinner and
a free drive to the Keflavík air-
port when you leave.
Camping in comfort sounds
ideal for a slower, take-your-
time, stay overnight where your
fancy leads you kind of holiday.
Some, of many places, to visit
are:
Golden Circle
The golden circle con-
sists of the three most popular
tourist places in Iceland; the
national park Þingvellir, the
waterfall Gúllfoss and the fa-
mous Geysir. We recommend
that everyone visit these places
and experience these special
nature pearls. A drive up to the
highlands is also highly recom-
mended; there you will be able
to explore Uxahryggi, Kaldadal
and experience the renowned
Kjöl road.
Arnarstapi
Arnarstapi comprises of
great natural beauty and there
you will find one of the most
beautiful beaches on the whole
Snæfellsnes. The place is very
popular among tourists, where
people go to enjoy the nature
and the enchanting glacier,
Snæfellsnesjökull. Arnarstapi
is a place that you should defi-
nitely have in your travel plans.
Mývatn
Again the natural beauty at
Lake Mývatn is amazingly cap-
tivating; it’s a place where the
fire metabolism have sculpted
the landscape for centuries.
Lake Mývatn is one of the big-
gest lakes in Iceland (36,5 km2)
and is famous for its bird life.
It is believed that you will find
more duck types here than in
any other place on the earth.
Ásbyrgi
The canyon Ásbyrgi is
without a doubt one of the most
beautiful places in Iceland. It
is surrounded by cliffs that get
higher the further you go in and
reach up to 100 metres.
Skaftafell
Skaftafell is a national park
where you will find great natu-
ral beauty, good weather and
a fantastic selection of hiking
paths. The combination makes
Skaftafell the ultimate place
to visit for those who want to
enjoy the outdoors in Icelandic
nature. Skaftafell encompasses
of multifaceted services to tour-
ists and it is for sure that no one
will go home untouched.
Jökulsárlón
The Glacier Lagoon
Jökulsárlón is a unique natural
pearl where huge icebergs drift
on the glacier lagoon. The sea
is also connected to the lagoon
and is therefore a blend of sea
and fresh water. In areas where
food can be found in the lagoon,
you will see seals and birds in
their natural habitat. Here you
can go for a 35 minute sail
around the lagoon in a special
wheel boat with a guide who
will tell you everything there is
to know about the lagoon.
