The following emigrant
names were chosen randomly
from the book “Vesturfaraskrá
– A Record of Emigrants from
Iceland to North America 1870-
1914”.
Halldór Þorgilsson
farmer age 43
Málmfríður Tómasdóttir
his wife age 41
Þorgils Halldórsson
their son age 18
Kristján Halldórsson
their son age 8
Guðrún Halldórsdóttir
their daughter age 1
This family emigrated in
1876 from the farm Hundadalur
Neðri north of the town of Bi-
fröst. They set sail from Reyk-
javík aboard the ship ‘Camoens’,
with the destination of Winni-
peg.
Our computer database and
various reference books in our
library contain the following in-
formation about these people:
Halldór Þorgilsson was
born November 3, 1830 at the
farm Fremri-Hundadalur in
Dalasýsla, north of the town of
Bifröst. His father was Þorgils
Halldórsson (1800 - 24.9.1852),
and his mother was Sólveig Hel-
gadóttir (7.3.1800 – 26.7.1867).
He died on October 11, 1919.
Halldór had one sister, Helga
Þorgilsdóttir (1829 – 1882).
Málmfríður Tómasdóttir
was born October 17, 1833. Her
father was Tómas Eiríksson
(29.5.1808 – 21.10.1878) and
her mother was Guðrún Jóhan-
nesdóttir (2.4.1805 - ?). They
were farmers at Ketilsstaðir in
Hörðadalur, Dalasýsla. She had
two half-brothers: Kristján
Tómasson (1844–1907) and
Tómas Tómasson Hördal
(12.12.1857 - ?) who immigrated
in 1887 along with his wife Mar-
grét Benediktdóttir (1852-1923)
and their two daughters. They
settled first in North Dakota and
then in Elfros, SK.
Þorgils Halldórsson
(9.3.1857 – 1.2.1941) He was a
farmer and blacksmith in Moun-
tain, ND. He married Kristín
Jónsdóttir (1853-1956) and
they had five children: Sólveig
Guðrún (1886-1986), Málm-
fríður (1892), Rose (1894), Mar-
grét (1895), and Gerry (1895).
Kristján Halldórsson
(8.6.1867 – 23.4.1950) He mar-
ried María Rögnvaldsdóttir, the
daughter of Ólöf Kjartansdóttir,
the second wife of Þorgils Hall-
dórsson. They lived in Pembina,
ND and had two children: Ólöf
(1889) and Málfríður (1892).
Guðrún Halldórsdóttir
(circa 1875). She is not men-
tioned in any records so it is
likely that she died young, either
on the journey or shortly after
arrival in North America.
Þorgils and Málmfríður also
had a son Tómas Halldórsson
(6.4.1863 – 24.10.1944). When
Tómas was six years old he was
sent to live with his mother’s
sister Margrét Kristín Tómas-
dóttir (circa 1835) and Sumar-
liði Þorkelsson (circa 1806) as
a foster child. He immigrated to
North Dakota with them in 1882,
when he was 19 years old. Tó-
mas married Þórvör Marselína
Jónasdóttir (1859), a widow
with two children. They had
eight more children: Margrét
Kristín Málfríður (1890), Hall-
dór Marcelíus (1894), Tómas
Sumarliði (1895), Þórvör Aldís,
Skúli Helgi, Vilhjálmur Kris-
tinn, María Helga, and Gíslína
Guðfinna.
Þorgils Halldórsson had a
second wife, Ólöf Kjartansdót-
tir (11.12.1843 – 16.10.1937).
She had four children from two
previous relationships and she
and Þorgil had one son, Friðrik
Theodór Halldórsson (circa
1880). Friðrik married Guðlaug
Gunnell Bjarnadóttir (circa
1880) and they farmed in Moun-
tain, ND.
After immigrating in 1876,
Halldór and Málmfríður went
first to Mikley (Heckla Island) in
Manitoba. It is said that Halldór
intended to build a church on his
land and call his farm Kirkjuból.
However, in 1882 they went to
North Dakota and settled land
near the town of Mountain. Þor-
gils was well known for his re-
markable strength, even at age
60. He was also very generous
and always ready to help others
when needed.
