Being a great seafaring nation, the Norwegians have established seamen’s churches in many of the
world’s ports. One has been operating in
Miami for 30 years. Some years ago the
Norwegian community in South Florida
decided that the old church in Miami
needed to be replaced.
Fundraising was started and even-
tually a property was found in Davie,
just west of Ft. Lauderdale, not far from
the large IKEA store. There were several
buildings on the lot and it was decided to
build the church and convert some of the
buildings to a Scandinavian Center.
There has always been confusion about which nations belong
to Scandinavia. Technically only Norway and Sweden are on the
peninsula, but Denmark is always included. Sometimes Finland
and Iceland are added, but politically the term Nordic nations
counts all five and in addition the semi-autonomious countries
of Faroe Islands and Åland Island.
The Norwegians in Florida graciously
included Finland and Iceland in their new
Scandinavian center and hoisted their
flags in addition to the flags of the “the
big three”.
The Norwegian Crown Princesse
Mette-Marit came to Davie last
November to officially open the church
and center. The plan is to make the place a center for cultural
activity of the Scandinavian nations in Florida. It is interesting to
note that the combined population of these five nations is about
25 million. The population of Iceland is only 330,000 or 1.3%.
Definitely the little brother.
