On May 8, a luncheon was held at the home of Margret Grisdale,
co-hosted by Agnes Cooke.
The past Fjallkonur of Calgary
gathered to welcome Gwen
Olivia Mann as the new
Fjallkona for Alberta. She
will be officially crowned
at the Markerville Picnic on
June 15. Present were Lilja
Hiebert , Eleanor Oltean, Alda
Sigvaldason, Iris Torfason,
Agnes Cooke and Margret
Grisdale. Margret Geppert
was unable to attend. The Leif
Eiriksson Icelandic Club is
very proud of Gwen who has
worked so diligently for the
good of her Icelandic heritage.
Gwen has held positions
of President, Secretary,
Membership and Historian
for our club and has worked
tirelessly on many committees.
She was also the Historian for
the INL and for many years was
responsible for the publishing
of the INL calendar. We wish
Gwen great success in her new
role as Alberta Fjallkona.
“Spring has sprung!” these were the welcoming words
by Bernice Andersen as she
introduced the annual spring
fund-raiser at Fensala Hall in
Markerville. It was a spring
atmosphere both inside and out
as the guests arrived for the
Saturday evening dessert theatre
or the Sunday brunch theatre.
Say It Ain’t So Company had
hometown actor Fred Andersen
co-directing the first one act
play, Smell of Burning, starring
Carla Falk, Brian Spencer and
Tim Newcomb. Then a speedy
switch into a different role, with
Tim playing guitar and singing,
followed by “Alberta Bert” (Fred
Andersen acting the cowboy
song) and then Brian Spencer
reciting humorous poetry.
Meanwhile, Kathleen
Raines was setting out
the delectable desserts on
Saturday night and an extra
scrumptious brunch on Sunday.
Following much enjoyment
of the refreshments, food,
and visiting, the crowd was
presented with a second one act
play, A New Sunrise, starring
Fred, Carla and Tim.
A huge thanks to Bernice
Andersen for co-ordinating the
events, to the actors, the food
service people and all those who
came to be entertained.
