Glíma is a form of wrestling unique to the Scandinavian countries
and is a national sport in Iceland.
Glíma translates literally as “the
game of joy” and is an art which
is roughly 1100 years old. The
bouts are usually held outdoors.
The combatants wear a
harness that combines a belt on
each thigh which is connected
by vertical straps to the belt
around the waist
The two wrestlers
(glímumenn) stand nearly
erect, each a little to the left of
the other with a slightly wide
stance and the right foot slightly
advanced. They look over each
other’s right shoulder, but never
down at the feet, the reason for
this rule being that the wrestlers
are to wrestle by touch and feel
and not by sight.
The wrestlers, with their
right hand, each take hold of the
opponent’s waist belt on the left
and use their left hand to grip
the belt on the opponent’s right
thigh then they begin to step
to their right (stígandi). Each
contestant seeks to throw the
other by causing him to lose his
balance using distinctive throws
done with the legs, hips and feet.
There are eight basic tricks but
there are several variations of
each.
The bouts are determined by
falls, either one fall or two out
of three. A fall is counted when
one touches the ground with any
part of his body above the knee
or the elbow. Kicking or ground
wrestling is illegal.
The opponents may be
either men or women in any
combination: man against man,
woman to woman or woman to
man. Glíma is not necessarily a
contest of strength but rather of
balance and agility.
Glíma was a regular feature
at Íslendingadagurinn for many
years with both individual and
team competitions. The current
president of the Icelandic
Festival, Cam Arnason has held
the championship in the past.
There is a persistent rumour that
there may be an exhibition of
Glíma at the Íslendingadagurinn
125 celebrations.
