I first met Hjálmar in Iceland before he came to Canada to become our first
Icelandic ambassador. I was
there on holiday when he got
in touch and invited me to his
office to get to know me. It was
typical of his attention to detail
and enthusiasm about his new
posting that he took advantage
of the opportunity to get a head
start on his new job.
In the years to follow, we
saw a lot of him and Anna in
Toronto, and worked closely
with them to promote all things
Icelandic. For instance, he
helped obtain funding for the
concerts across the country
which the International Visits
Program of INL of NA organized
for mezzo soprano Ingveldur
Ýr Jónsdottir and pianist
Guðríður St. Sigurðardóttir,
as well as bringing world
famous sculptor Steinunn
Þorarinsdóttir and her work to
Toronto. The founding of the
Icelandic Canadian Chamber of
Commerce was one of his early
accomplishments. He attended
our Þorrablóts, Gourmet
Dinners, and INL conventions,
as well as our June 17 picnic,
which brought together Ottawa,
Montreal, and Toronto clubs at
the site of an Icelandic sheep
farm in Ontario, where he read
the poetry of Guttormur J.
Guttormsson.
On a personal level, I was
very pleased when he made
me an honorary consul on
December 10, 2002. But all
too soon, he was snatched
away from us to fulfill
important duties as Permanent
Representative to the United
Nations in New York. We
missed his energy and skill,
but were happy to have him
back in Canada again as Consul
General in Winnipeg. There
is no doubt that he and Anna
enriched all of our lives, and we
will miss them. Takk fyrir allt.
