Liturgy of St Knud Lavard - Introduction

and with only sporadic signs of wear and tear. The text is written in one
practised hånd throughout, and this hånd appears also to have supplied
the musical notation in art. 1 (see notes to lines 216-17, 591-92, and
650 in the edition; the hånd is more compactly executed in arts. 2-3 than
in art. 1). There are 20 lines to a full page of text but of course fewer
where the page includes music. The latter is written in square neumes
and normally on four-line staves, though staves of three lines occur on f.
lr-v (all except the first stave of f. lv) and f. 14v (the last stave of five).
These staves are drawn, and the liturgical rubrics written, in red ink; the
neumes and the body of the text are written in black.21 In art. 1 initials
mark the division of the text into liturgical units and sub-units. They are
coloured red and blue and regularly decorated with so-called palmetto
omamentation. Capital letters at the beginning of sentences in the longer
prose passages are touched in red; symbols connecting the syllables of
underlaid words in the chant are similarly written in red. Initials ren-
dered particularly prominent by their size and/or decoration occur at the
following places in art. 1 (as will be seen, there is no consistent scheme
for their use):

21 There is no foundation for Kroman’s statement that the text block on each page is en-
closed in “Rammestreger” (i.e. pre-ruled frames; cf. CSRD xm).
