446—19, Addenda no. I). The collect (VSD 446,1-4) resembles, but is
not quite identical with, the Mass collect of the Passion in K; it leaves
out the parallel locutions in terris ... in celis, which are also omitted
there but present in the Matins collect of the same feast (edition lines
945—46 and 544-45 respectively; cf. the Mass secret in Missale Hafni-
ense, section 4.1.4 below). Other variants are ducis et martyris for K 543/
944 martyris, and honore for K 544/945 hodie, of which the latter is ob-
viously secondary. The lessons, nine in number as already mentioned,
correspond to the eight lessons of the Passion in K (for the division into
nine lessons see further pp. 48-49 with n. 81 below). Though the whole
narrative has been condensed and rewritten, BKB might just very
occasionally have preserved more original wording than K. Examples
worth considering are (K] BKB = VSD 446,5^149,5):
104 correptus febre] veniensque Cyprum febre correptus 446,9
108 Qui etsi inde me proiecerit, extra cimiterium sepelite] et facite
sicut dixi 446,12
138 cum prece petitum optinuit] precio ducatum optinuit 447,6
327-28 puer precedens premunire (!) [...] ducem uolens] Qui prece-
dens [...] vt per hec dux moneretur 448,25-27
The first of these readings could, however, be suspected of direct depen-
dence on Saxo, cf. the phrase Hic rexfebri implicatus (Saxonis Gesta
Danorum I, Copenhagen 1931 [SaxoOR], 339,30), while the second is
very likely the redactor’s ad hoc replacement of an apparently meaning-
less sentence in his original. Saxo’s influence might also be invoked
with regard to the third reading, for while most historians from Robert
of Ely onwards seem to have known the story about King Erik Ejegod’s
death and burial on Cyprus,42 it is Saxo who stresses the faet that Knud
Lavard paid King Niels a price for the dukedom of Schleswig (cf.formi-
dolosum aliis munus pretio assecutus est, SaxoOR 346,7-8).43 On the
42 VSD 234 (Robert of Ely, Excerpta Vedeliana Ser. I, Lib. 1,1); SMHD I 25,21 (Roskilde
Chroniclé), 128,28 = 129,26 (Sven Aggesen); SaxoOR 339,28-35, cf. SMHD I 391,11
(Compendium Saxonis); VSD 213,2-3 = SMHD II 24,19 (Older Zealand Chroniclé);
KnytlBG 238 (Knytlinga saga ch. 81); etc. - Waitz1 10-11 already noticed that K’s narra-
tive is garbled at this point (in particular the words about the cemetery that have been re-
placed in BKB).
43 The historical credibility of this information was already emphasised by Hermann Reich,
“Knud Laward, Herzog von Schleswig,” in: Jahrbucher fur die Landeskunde der Herzog-
thiimer Schleswig, Holstein und Lauenburg 10, 1869, 203-54 [Reich], here 230 n. 3,237.
