This secular order of service presupposes nine lessons at Matins. No
lessons are actually provided for the third noctum, where it is reasonable
to assume that a standard homily on the Gospel was read in three portions.
The lessons of the first and second noctums are very short; they are based
on the first, second, and final lessons as found in K, and thus focus exclu-
sively on the ancestry and death of the saint. Between Lauds and Second
Vespers there are rubrics directing that ‘everything else’ (cetera, here pre-
sumably referring to the minor hours) should follow the Common of One
Martyr with commemorations of the Epiphany and the Blessed Virgin.
The responds of K’s monastic scheme are reduced from twelve to nine by
the omission of those paired with lessons 9-11 in K. The selection seems
to be purely mechanical and is at all events not govemed by the same prin-
ciple as has been applied to the abbreviation of the lessons.
For the Translation feast O has the general rubric Cantus totus de uno
Martire before the first nocturn. In addition it specifies the following
texts for the Translation:
First Vespers74 Antiphon [ad Memoriam]: Aue martir dux Danorum, as at
the Passion feast
74 Texts specified under the rubric Postea de translatione sancti Kanuti ducis; immediate-
ly preceding is Second Vespers of St John the Baptist with the Magnificat antiphon Puer
qui natus est nobis (LU 1505-06).
