This survey poses two obvious textual problems, the one relating to the
psalmody at Matins and the other to the responds. The first antiphon of
the last noctum in R, wanting in Rs, refers to Ps. 10 but is not the same
as the antiphon to that psalm in K and O. The last antiphon of the first
noctum in R, also wanting in Rs, refers to Ps. 54 and is the same as the
antiphon to that psalm in K; however, at the end of the first noctum in O
we find the antiphon belonging not to Ps. 54 but to the canticles of the
last noctum in K. This last-mentioned antiphon, Dux Kanute da duca-
tum, displays no textual link to any psalm and is therefore appropriate
enough at its place in K, but quite inappropriate in O. As for the re-
sponds, which are twelve in number in K, they are reduced to nine in R
and O by omitting those paired with Lessons 9-11 in K, whereas in Rs
the reduction is achieved by omitting those paired with Lessons 2-4.
While Gertz already noted, though he could not solve, the problem of
the responds (cf. VSD 181 n. 1), he quite neglected to study the an-
tiphons of Matins. Had he done so, he too might have realised what the
wider range of evidence now compels us to assume, namely that the ca-

directs the user to find this text in the Common of Confessors, but in R (f. ccccxli ra) it ac-
tually occurs as the first chapter selection in the Common of One Virgin, following direct-
ly after the Common of Confessors.
