Here *y and its uninterpolated offshoots belong to the primary secular re-
cension *x (with at least the Translation lessons already abbreviated in
*y, cf. section 2.2.1 above), while *k represents the process of monastic
expansion at Ringsted. Whereas the suspect readings of the Vita at K 108
and 277-78 noted on p. 56 can be presumed already to have been in *x,
the chronological error at 791 kalendas iunij (for *iulij, the correct date
of the Translation) must have been introduced in K; it could hardly have
been present in the authoritative lectionary of the cult centre.
K has a dozen or so slips of the pen and obvious linguistic errors (see
notes to emendations in the edition); these could have been committed
or corrected at any stage in the textual transmission and call for no dis-
cussion here. We find, however, a few significant errors that K has be-
queathed to R, not only 791 iunij but also 758 et (for *id), 788 incedens,
sapienti (? for *incedenti, sapiens), and not least the appearance in R
(and O) of the antiphon Benedictus Dominus for the Gospel canticle at
Lauds of both the Passion and the Translation (see above, pp. 15, 40-41,
45). A further trace of the influence of K on R is the intrusion of Ps. 54
with its antiphon at the end of the first nocturn of Matins in the Roskilde
book (cf. above, p. 44). In the Common of One Martyr the first three
psalms of secular Matins are Pss. 1-2-3,101 but K’s first three psalm an-
tiphons are for Pss. 1-2^1, it being normal monastic practice to recite
Ps. 3 without antiphon as part of the preamble to the service (cf. edition
lines 44-45). Now the third to the fifth, and the sixth to the eighth,
