Event Picks
Two songs from ‘Some Kind
Of Peace’, the most recent
album by neoclassical artist
Ólafur Arnalds, have been nominated
for Grammy Awards—the first time
his work has been recognised by the
esteemed industry body. The track
“Loom”, made in collaboration with
British dance artist Bonobo, has been
nominated for Best Dance/Electronic
Recording. And “The Bottom Line”,
featuring German musician Josin, has
been put forward in the category of
Best Arrangement, Instrument and
Vocals. The Grammy Awards ceremony
will be held on January 31st in Los
Angeles. JG
Kári Stefánsson—director of Icelandic
Genetics, and also known fondly as Kári
The Mad Scientist—has collaborated
with the band Hjálmar, who have set to
music a poem that he wrote in memo-
riam to his recently deceased wife. The
song, simply called “Kona” (“Woman”),
is accompanied by a black and white
video featuring Kári dressed in sombre
suit and looking understandably
bereft. In a facebook post announcing
her death in Landspítali last month,
Kári described his wife, Valger!ur
Ólafsdóttir, as his “companion for 53
years.” Both the poem and the song
are beautiful and, we’re unashamed
to admit, caused a few tears in the
Grapevine office. JG
Icelandic metal band Power Paladin
have signed to label Atomic Fire
Records, ahead of the release of their
debut album in January. The six-piece
group, who formed in 2017, recorded
and produced the nine-track record
themselves, then had it mixed by
fellow Icelander Haukur Hannes at
Mastertape Studios. Previously known
as Nuclear Blast, Atomic Fire Records
represents some of the biggest
names in metal, including Opeth and
Meshuggah. Power Paladin—who are
influenced by Iron Maiden, Helloween
and and Dio, according to Atomic Fire
Records—are the first Icelandic act to
be signed by the prestigious label. JG

kurinn - 6.666 ISK
The annual Antichristian Festival
returns to shake your beliefs to
their very core! With a line-up of
bands including Nyi#, Sólstafir and
Mis#yrming it will be serving up
a veritable orgy of metal with an
occult bent. And on this, its 20th
anniversary, festival organisers have
promised to create something very
special for this year’s shenanigans.
A visit from His Satanic Majesty,
perhaps? Rock up and see… RH
THEM
December 5th - 18:00 & 21:00 - Dansverkstæ!i! -
1,900 ISK
This theater experience
created by four
Icelandic and Finnish
women investigates
toxic masculinity and
its impact on society.
THEM explains how this
toxicity narrows our
perception of gender
by shaping gender roles
and making people
act against their moral
sense. It highlights
the taboos linked to
masculinity and urges
viewers to respect
feminine qualities.
The performance
is based on over 40
interviews with men, all
coming from different
backgrounds. The
actresses bring these
interviews—where
relationships with
gender, emotional
life and sexuality are
discussed—to life on
stage. THEM has been
in the works since
2016, with its work-
in-progress shows
developing the project
each time. The show
promises to be sad,
shocking and hilarious—
all at the same time. RH
