fairly frequently on both sides of the Djúp. Gentiana
amarella and G. aurea are only found on the south side
but are rare (I. Ó.). G. serrata only at Laugaból near the
head of the Djúp. Myosotis arvensis and Mertensia mari-
tima are only found on the north of the Djúp, and Myoso-
tis only at one place, Hafnardalur. Sagina nodosa and S.
subulata are both found on the south side but are rare,
and again to the north in the Jökulfirðir by Hesteyri.
Stellaria humifusa is found at Laugaból in fsafjörður
although the determination of this species is uncertain.
From these observations it is, therefore, difficult to say
that the flora of Æðey is to any real extent more closely
related to that of one shore of the Djúp than to the other,
although it might have been expected to be much more
like that of the north shore than the south, considering
the difference in the distance. This is also the case if the
distribution of the various species is well considered and
all species not accorded the same value whether they are
found once or are common. It may also be mentioned that
it is doubtful whether there is much difference between
the lowland species on the northern and southern sides of
the Djúp, although there is a considerable difference in
the alpine species. It may also be added that probably the
distances involved here are not so great that they have
any real influence on the distribution of the plants, at least
of those which can distribute themselves over their near
neighbourhood.
With these remarks I conclude this survey of the vege-
tation of Æðey.
