flood basalts in Iceland. In the crestal zone the high heat
flow values occur along the epicenter belt and here vertical
permeability can be expected to be greater due to vertical
fractures. By comparison with conditions in Iceland it ap-
pears that favourable conditions for free convection of water
may exist in the crestal zone of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, and
possibly also to some extent outside the crestal zone.
