from Miklumýrar, where the frequency of Carex Bigelowii is con-
siderable.
Related sociations are descrihed in various places in Scandinavia
and neighbouring countries. Among these the following are men-
tioned, Carex rariflora — Calliergon sarmentosum — Drepanoc-
ladus exannulatus purpurascens Braunmoor from the Fischerhalh-
insel, which Kalela (1939, pp. 498-500) describes, hoth species
composition and biological conditions. The same may be said about
C. rariflora Niedermoor (Fries 1913, p. 133) in Lapland:
“Diese Soziation ist sehr typisch fiir die von Wasser heim-
gesuchten relativ mageren, offenen Moore des Untersuchungs-
gebietes. Die Torfunterlage ist bedeutend nasser als in C.
rotundata, nicht selten ist der Standboden etwas schappend.
Insbesondere in den höheren Teilen der Fjelde trifft man ab
und zu auch Siedlungen dieser Soziation in isohert liegenden
flachen, nassen und dunntorfigen Vertiefungen der Heide-
tundra Ass.” (Kalela l.c., p. 498).
This description could well apply to the C. rariflora sociation
here. Still the relationship seems closer with the C. rariflora —
Drepanocladus intermedius -—• Scorpidium scorpidides Braunmoor,
since it is intimately related to E. angustifolium and C. chordorrhiza
sociations. (Kalela l.c., p. 473).
g. Carex saxatilis flói — Caricétum saxatilis
C. saxatilis may be considered common in flói vegetation. It be-
comes noticeable in particular in the vicinity of ponds. There is
seldom, however, such abundance that it becomes predominant in
physiognomy or covering, which I have in such instances defined
as one sociation.

The only analysis is from Stafholtsey in Borgarfjörður. It was
taken from a narrow belt surrounding a pond, and the area is so
