flói in the depressions, hut this sociation mostly occurs fairly high
up the slopes and covers the hilltops. The ground is fairly moist.
Analysis 2 is from Ásólfsstaðir in Þjórsárdalur in a gently sloping
area at the border of a wood. The soil is sandy and peat formation
is very scanty or none at all. Analysis 3 is from Kollabær in Fljóts-
hlíð. There the sociation covers an extensive area which slopes
evenly to the south. These are meadows, generally very grassy
and mostly with a flat surface. As far as individual species are
concerned, Trifolium repens is worthy of note since it often occurs
in an Equisetum-mire in those parts of the country where it nor-
mally occurs. Analysis 4 is from Stóra-Hof in Rangárvellir from
a rather small area of mires.
Analyses 5—6 are from Vopnafjörður. In 6 the ground is rather
moist for this sociation. Carex capillaris is particularly noteworthy
in this area. Analyses 7-9 are from Breiðdalur. It should be made
clear that analysis 9 is made in a sloping depression where snow
tends to gather, but the ground is usually dry during the summer.
The surface is flat. Gramineous vegetation is here more prevalent
than usual under these conditions, particularly Deschampsia cæspi-
tosa and Festuca rubra. There are also a few tufts of Juncus balti-
cus. This is due to the characteristic moisture conditions of the
ground, for there are many indications of a transitional form to
border (jaðar) or even grassfield. This shows clearly what happens
if the C. nigra-Equisetum mires dries up. This is a common vegeta-
tion form in Breiðdalur. Analyses 10—11 from Berunes do not war-
rant any specific comment. Analysis Xx. I is from Grófargerði in
Fljótsdalshérað. It is extracted from a damp, flat mire with a slight
slope. E. palustre has little covering there despite high frequency.
Analyses 2 and 5 are from Bæjarsveit in Borgarfjörður. In 5 the
knolls are low and flat, but in the mudpits between them Meny-
anthes trifoliata is almost the only species to be found. Analyses
3-4 are from Snæfellsnes, from relatively dry mires. There the
knoll-pattern varies and in most places there is considerable moss.
The sociation is extensive along the mountain and at the foot of
the slopes. Analysis 6 is from Tungudalur in Bolungavík. The
moss there is so extensive as to cover up to 40% of the surface.
There is a trace of Sphagnum. Of the phanerogamous species C.
nigra is dominant in physiognomy and covering. In Bolungavik
