rather than the niýri, but since it always occurs in areas which are
drier than the two first-mentioned, I have regarded its three so-
ciations as belonging to the mýri. No statement can be made as
to its relationship to plant communities in other countries, beyond
what has already been said with respect to the flói.
52. Carex rariflora — Calamagrostis neglecta — Eriophorum
Scheuchzeri sociation (Tah. XI A-B 8-11)
This sociation occurs in a few places in the highland, but I have
found it to be most widely distributed at Landmannahellir where
the land slopes only slightly, the ground is fairly dry and there is
considerable moss; in this respect it can be distinguished from the
flói sociations. The landscape is characterised by shallow hollows,
where the analyses were made, alternating with slightly elevated
strips of land mostly covered with border- or heath vegetation. Eri-
ophorum Scheuchzeri occurs mostly towards the outer edge of those
patterned strips.
In analysis 10 E. Scheuchzeri disappears although the conditions
differ only in one respect; namely, that this analysis was made
where the strip-border is 10-20 cm. higher than the hollow where
analysis 8 was made. A group constitutes a clear majority. G is
the dominant lifeform, but the HH percentage is rather high. This
area is probably at a transitional stage. Plants have taken root in
the moist sand and this sociation is still to be found in the hollows,
but where the land has been elevated more, mainly as a result of
blown sand deposits, the vegetation is converted into borderland
phasing into heath. Analysis 11 is from Þjófadalir where the same
species generally occur, the conditions being mostly identical. E.
Scheuchzeri, however, is absent here.
53. C. rariflora — Comarum palustre sociation
(Tab. XI A-B 12)
Only one observation exists, from Fróðárdalur in the highland
area of Kjölur. Apart from the character species Vaccinimn uligi-
nosum, Salix glauca, Calamagrostis neglecta and Polygonum vivi-
