Hveravellir, the öD-values are obtained from the deuterium map. The location
and altitude for each station are given in VeSráttan, the annual report of the Ice-
landic Meteorological Office. The mean temperatures used are mean values for
the period 1931—1960. The figure also shows the lines obtained by Dansgaard
et al. (1973) for isobaric cooling for coastal stations in Southwest and West
Greenland and for moist-adiabatic cooling for the Greenland inland stations.
The anomalous t—ÖD relationship at shielded stations is under-
standable in view of the following facts. At these stations the pre-
cipitation is frequently brought by air masses which have previ-
ously travelled over high mountains and may therefore have been
cooled to a temperature much lower than that measured at the
meteorological station. Thus the mean ground-level temperature at
the meteorological station is very likely to deviate much more
from the actual condensation temperature than at an unshielded
coastal station. A good example of a shielded station is the station
Hólar in Hjaltadal in North Iceland (No. 58), which is the station
